The main ingredients in gum are sugar, gum base, corn syrup, softeners, flavoring and coloring. Gum base is mostly plastic and rubber but it also might have latex which is a natural ingredient. Natural latex, such as chicle, is the sap from trees in the rain forest. Gum manufacturers like to keep their exact recipes secret.

So what you should have learned is that the reason gum doesn't dissolve in your mouth is because you are chewing on a wad of rubber and/or latex with a bit of flavoring. This also means that when you swallow gum it won't be digested so it comes out in one piece. It will, however, stay inside you for a few days.
So, as you can see - you can't 'eat' gum and if you "chew" a lot of it - according to some dentists - they hate it - but I have known it to relax some people (my students swear by it) and helps them think. Personally, I used to enjoy chewing gum as younger person. As an adult - I HATE to see people chew gum - basically because they don't know 'how' to chew it - they smack - and chew with their mouths wide open and you can see the gum rolling around inside their mouth. It's an ugly sight. I also used to crack gum - and I hate to hear that sound today. lol I do not allow gum-chewing in my classroom - why? for the reasons given and one more that's even more important - they leave it on the floor of my classroom, up under their desks, and other places on furniture that gum has no business.

some kids do =if you eat too much you could get a blockage and then you would have to go to hospital ,where they would put a long tube through your nose to your stomach and you would be in hospital with nothing to eat at all until your blockage cleared up

I don't think it's great for digestion, but it won't stay with you for seven years like the old wivestale goes. I've swallowed mine since I was a kid and I seem to be fine. Although, I still won't let my kids do it. Ahh...to be a parent.
