Religious theists like Christians certainly think so, but they have a hard time proving it — or even just explaining how their belief is reasonable. Under other circumstances, the difficulty in supporting a belief should engender a recognition that it's reasonable to disbelieve, but that's completely denied in this case. Instead, many believers insist that not only is disbelief in their religious doctrines unreasonable but is in fact immoral. If the existence of their god were so obvious, though, shouldn't they be able to demonstrate it relatively easily?
A forum member explains how believers might prove the existence of their god:

This is so simple. It's been right under our noses all the time: a test for the existence of God.

I'm going to do this experiment, and I suggest that EVERYBODY do it, atheists, agnostics, Christians, Zoroastrians: Talk to God and tell him that if he can do anything - create the world in six days, kill his own son for the sins of the world, set the galaxies in motion - then surely he can appear in your living room for five minutes so that you can chat with him.

What a small thing for the God of the universe to do!!! Nothing is too hard for him (Jeremiah 32:27); with God all things are possible (Matt. 19:16). And we're not even asking him for a miracle. We just want him to spend five minutes with us IN PERSON. If he really loves us so much (John 3:16), he should be willing to spend some time with us.

Please try this in your own home, and let me know the results (I'm particularly interested in what he looks like - if he has an elephant's head, for instance, there are going to be lots of disillusioned Moslems). After more than 112,000 messages in this thread, there's still no

There will be no concrete evidence to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt in everyones head that God does exist. (Until it it is too late)

Absolute Proof of the Bible would totally kill Faith.

Faith is one of the most important things in all of creation.

Hebrews 11
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report. Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which ware seen were not made of things which do appear.....

There have been countless martyrs blood shed in the name of Faith... And God will surely never send us this proof thereby making the saints sacrifices in vain.

The proof is in God's word itself... but you must lend some faith to our Lord before he will open that door to you.

God Bless you.

You dont have to see something to know its real. For example I can not see your brain, therefore you have no brain. Is that absurd? Well so is your test. The creation of your eyeball, a mechanism so complex that it can not be duplicated should be evidence enough for the existence of god for even the lamest of people. We Christians know that God is alive and well and living in our hearts. How else could any explain how I , a lousy no good liar, a fornicator, an adulterer, a murderer (in my heart), a drunkerd, a thieving cheating low down snake could be transformed into a holy,Godly, law abiding born again saint. Only the love of God and the blood of Jesus could do it. No drugs, no shrinks, no extended jail time, no rehabilitation time, No Oprah , no Dr. Phil, no group therapy, nothing but the blood of Jesus . You can have all the surveys and tests you want. Come judgement day you will bow your head, bend your knee and confess with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord. Don't wait til then. Do it now. Come to Christ! Oh by the way he occasionally does come down and chat with his servants, many have seen him. I hope he decides to visit you, so that you too will be a believer. If he does not, it doesnt mean he is not . That is as sure as the brain in your head. Cap'n Arlo

Dude, I have read some of the answers to your question, and the only conclusion that I can come up with is that people are going to continue to believe what they believe no matter what proof you show them one way or another. Look man, it's hard to stop believing in what many of us have been brought up to worship. If there is a god (and I don't believe there is) he has chosen for us weather we do or do not believe in him. Does not the bible say that God is all knowing. Is it not said that if a single hair on you head is moved by the wind, that god knows about it, and furthermore it was his will that your hair move. Therefore if everything is controlled by God, then so are my thoughts are controlled by him as well. And because of this I won't go to church or worship him in any way, and then I'm doomed to hell. Correct if you think I am wrong. There is no way to prove the existence of God. But there is one place you can go to prove there isn't one. The Bible

Thank you. This is actually one of the most biblicall and intelligent commentary I have read to confront Atheists.. The Holy Bible is true and it is the inspired word of God. I strongly believe in God. I believe that he Created the entire Universe. I might add that Evolution and Big bang Theory is the biggest fraud in human history. Many scientists are waking up to the reality that these human theories have to many holes. They are not reliable at all. Trust God today and forever. Oh, man, you're not going to believe this sh!t!...

So, I'm sitting here reading your question and thinking about taking a drink to it when, out of nowhere,...*POOF*,... you guessed it: GOD!

Now, you can well imagine how embarrassed I was, being an agnostic and all (well, up to that point anyway), - but he (sorry gals, but God IS a dude) was not all that disappointed about it.

I asked Him if He wanted to use my keyboard to answer your question, but He declined.
Of course, I know HE doesn't really NEED a keyboard; He doesn't NEED anything, - He's GOD!
But I felt it was a polite gesture, nonetheless...

He told me that He doesn't take tests;...
... never HAS, - never WILL.

He also said that anyone who has posted a response before this one who claim that they have also seen God as a response to your 'test' is lying, - and that He'll deal with them later...

So, there you have it, straight from The Big Guy.

Sorry, man...;-)

The Bible also says, Do not put the Lord your God to the test (Dueteronomy 6:16)

If you have witnessed all these things around you, and yet do not believe. Why would a holographic image suddenly prove that you need to worship God?

I would like you to test that God did not do the above metioned. Try to create life (not just the protein building blocks of life) with only the elements in the periodic table. Let me know when you have completed this.

you just spent at least 10 minutes of your life, wasted, gone forever, never to return, on something you don't even believe in, and knowing your effort will not make any difference... are you so small minded, or is your life so cheap ? or both ? now you will waste more of your life reading the inane and stupid answers (mine included) why ? why did you not choose to do something more constructive ?
last night I set out to prove lobsters did not exist... I boiled a big pot of water set the table and waited, you see I wanted to have a lobster for dinner. I left the front door open... no lobster showed up after 4 hours. I went to bed more convinced than ever there were no such things as lobsters...

Nod to SpiritPrincess! When I took a graduate level class in the philosophy of science, I was taught that is wasn't possible to "prove" anything with scientific methods. Science involves collecting evidence that will either provide support (NOT PROOF) for the hypothesis OR it will DISPROVE the hypothesis. It is not possible to use any scientific method to prove that God exists.

Having said that, the little "experiment" you proposed would NOT scientifically disprove his existence because of a little problem called "elimination of other possible causes". If God doesn't reveal himself to you in your living room that could just mean that he doesn't want to talk to YOU. More accurately, that he doesn't see the point.

Furthermore, the validity of any experiment is limited by your ability to influence the dependent variable...and if God is who he claims to be, it is worse than stupid to think that he would allow you (or anyone else) to manipulate him in this way.

If God DID show up in your living room, would you believe it or would you look for some "logical" explanation? Einstein defined insanity as doing the same thing and expecting a different result. If God exists as I and other believe he does, he is not insane. He DID speak F2F with Adam...and Adam didn't trust in him...he spoke to Moses through a burning bush...and Moses didn't trust him...he spoke to Abraham in a dream and Abraham didn't trust him him...he sent his son to die and people that knew him and watched him die didn't believe him. All these people believed that God existed and they couldn't trust what he was saying to them. What make you so special that God should think you'd believe him if he showed up in your living room?

The simple fact is this, if you believe he exists, he WILL reveal himself to you...if you don't believe he exists, you wouldn't believe it even if he slapped you upside the head!

Someone already answered this 2000 years ago.

Matthew 16:4 A wicked and adulterous generation looks for a miraculous sign, but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah." Jesus then left them and went away.

If you won't believe the witnessing of God by anyone but yourself, you have no faith.

The existence of G-d was tested several times in the Old Testament.

One test was the test of lighting a pyre. God's pyre ignited; the pyres of the other two guys didn't.
One test was the test of making specific fleeces moist and dry on alternate nights.
One test was the test of turning a staff into a serpent.

So, I expect y'all to set some fleeces out on your lawns tonight, marked with which ones you want to be dry and which wet.

I expect you to take your walking sticks, cast them to the ground, while asking G-d to serpentize them.

I expect you to build piles of vegetation on your lawns, with the names of G-d and the names of two other guys, dance around them for a day, and see which bursts into flame.
