He's a very sensitive dog (male) and has absolutely no instinct for chasing a ball. When I've tried to teach him he just gets really upset, sits down and looks like I'm telling him off even though I'm not. I really want to train him to chase a ball though to give him more exercise. I've tried in the garden as well as the park, and with rewards, but nothing I've tried seems to work!

Wow, a BC that's not ball obsessed, that might be a first. Try baby steps, first show the ball, give a treat until he understands that, then hold the ball in your hand until he touches it with his muzzle, give a treat. He'll figure that game out quickly. Then put the ball on the floor and treat when he touches it with his nose, Next roll the ball slightly and give a treat when he shows interest in it. Are you getting the idea here. Very subtle steps. BC's are hardwired to figure these thing out this way. Good Luck and have fun, make it a happy thing, but start on his level.

Try something else. My sons dog used to chase an object that he got at a pet store, that you put peanut butter in. The dog would chase it, and try to get the peanut butter out.
