how blessed we are when we have someone to call a friend. Sometimes a good friend can be worth more then a family member and be counted on more often to be there.

Hmmmmmm. My heart tells me that this statement does not describe a loyal friend. To me Glasow's statement speaks of a so-so friend where a deep relationship doesn't exist. The first part where the loyal friend is laughing at my not-so-good jokes could be anybody. Some people will laugh at jokes that aren't so good simply to be polite. That's not friendship. The second part where the friend sympathizes with my problems when they're not so bad sounds like someone who might not stick it out with me when things get really bad. A stranger can sympathize with my not-so-bad problems. It takes a truly loyal friend to stick with you when things are really tough and who will tell you the truth even though they know you don't want to hear it. And they tell the truth because they know that is what is best for you. That takes courage.
So I am wondering if Glasow's statement was stated tongue-in-cheek.

It tells me that a true friend looks beyond the surface and sees the beauty of the person hidden inside. We all have rather changeable exteriors, don't we? Our countenance may be diminished by a bad day, or even(in some cases) a bad life. A loyal friend, however, examines the person in all of their qualities, the weaknesses as well as the strengths, and accepts the humanity of the person, for humanity is truly beautiful. :)

You know, I've always appreciated the beautiful quotes you have posted on here; unfortunately, some of the ones from the past I did not answer too charitably---I have a stubborn sarcastic streak that gets the better of me most of the time. I apologize for any past answers that were none too charitable, and hope you see beyond that immaturity on my part. You are a good friend; you make me aspire to be a better man, and I thank you.

The average of the means is inversely proportional to the level of the friendship divided by the barometric pressure of the soul after you have had your first cup of coffee on the longest day of the year if there is a full moon and you are prone to swoon as you walk the dunes of a mid life crises.

(or something)

A little bit of light criticism never hurts, but one should never use a hammer to remove a fly from a friend's nose.

Okay... but a BETTER friend would sympathize with your problems when they're TERRIBLE.

A friend is someone that will come and bail you out. A good friend will be sitting right next to you saying "Damn, we screwed up".
