I am an atheist and whenever I debate Christians they always come up with the argument that everything in the universe must be created by "God" .. just like looking at a watch you know it was created, so too is everything in existance.

So I always ask them - "who created God?". I have yet to get a straight answer on that question. If *everything* must have a creator ... then so too must "God".

Interesting answers so far. As for the person who stated "you can't wrap your mind around something existing forever". Sure I can ... I personally believe that all the quantum particles in the universe have always existed in some form or another. They never had a beginning or will they have an end. I just don't believe there is any intelligence behind how they have formed together and interacted in our present universe.

For me, this boils down to whether or not you grasp the distinction between the "necessary" and the "contingent." This is part and parcel with the sciences: why is the sky blue; why do we have two genders and not three, or four; why is the universe 50 to 70 billion ly across when it is only 13.5 billion years old, and so forth.

Notice that those questions are different from questions like the following: why aren't there two integers (p and q) such that p/q is the square root of two; why is pi irrational; why when I assert that "All people are mortal", "Socrates is a person" is it always true that "Socrates is mortal"? These kind of questions do feel (and are) very different than "Why is the sky blue".

But what is the difference? The second set of questions deal with what is "necessary." They are facts that cannot be different than they are. God (if god exists) cannot produce two integers the division of which produces the square root of two. No matter what the bible says, pi is irrational. Socrates is mortal if it is always the case that all humans are mortal. These statements are true, *and* they are necessary. Does it make sense to ask: well, who made the integers and the real numbers so that you can't have p/q = sqrt(2)? Could it not be fixed? After all, it is only math. Right?

Sorry. To say that "X" is "necessary" is to say, "The question: 'Can X be different that it is?', that question makes no sense." Asking the question is an admission that one does not understand the difference between the two sorts of questions in the first place.

So, the claim being made about god is "God is Necessary." If one grants that, then asking "Who made god" is exactly the same as "Who made 2 the only even prime number?" To understand what 2 is, what evenness is, and what prime is means knowing why the question "Who made 2 the only even prime number?" just gets funny looks. To understand what the concept "god" entails is to understand why the question "Who made god?" just gets funny looks.

That doesn't mean that you can't deny the attribute to god, but if you do, your argument will evaporate. If you say, "God is contingent, and god does not exist" you will get my vote. The statement that "God is contingent and god does not exist." is as true as true can be. Indeed, no Christian, Muslim, or Jew that I know who is at all of a philosophical bent would dispute you, either.

But, of course, that is not the debate, is it? The question is whether or not a necessary being exists who could be said to be the creator of the universe as a whole; and if you enter *that* debate, then you understand how what I said above makes it clear why asking who created god is beside the point.

Whenever you use language and human meaning you are stuck within the parameters of that language and that meaning. Words can only say what words can say, and words can only mean what humans have given meaning to.
Language is a tool, like a hammer, and while a hammer can be used to build a wonderful home, it is really not your choice when it comes to brain surgery. Quite messy actually. Likewise, when you use language and meaning they must be used within a context that produces provable results and are within the scope of languages' uses.
God is just a symbol for that which cannot be symbolized any further in a way that makes sense using language.
Humans have a beginning and an end in life, and so the word creation is a human term. We begin at birth and we end at death. Nothing could be simpler as far as words and meaning are concerned. Everything is a word, with a meaning that means something to humans; so yes, everything (the word) had a beginning, and that beginning was in the creation of everythings' meaning.
God, again, is a symbol: as humans can deal with nothing else, the word god has become their ultimate symbol.
Do not try to use language to say what language cannot say, as it really gets messy and confusing. Kinda like doing brain surgery with a hammer!

Since we are simple humans with simple minds, it's hard for us to grasp the tremendous truth. The fact is, no one created God. He has always been in existence. Who else would have made everything if God didn't exist first? There has to be something that eternally exists or nothing would have ever came into creation. Okay, it's hard for me to explain this concept, but just know that God is all-powerful and all-knowing. He is a force like no other, a force that can't be reckoned with. Just believe that something great has always existed and always will. He keeps the world spinning. :)

This question can no man answer because it is a mystery. The Bible says "great is the mystery of godliness"

However, we can know what God has revealed in his Word through the prophets and that says "In the beginning God created the heavens and earth" in Genesis 1:1

We are finite and limited. God is infinite and unlimited.
All you have to do is look at the universe itself and see its infinity it becomes clear how awesome the Creator of it all must be.

The Creator has revealed himself in the person of Jesus Christ. "No man has seen God at any time, the only begotten Son which is in the bosom of the Father he has declared him" John 1:18

God is well its hard to explain. He has always been there. There is no begging and no end to him.

I also suggest if your an atheist reading the book " A case for christ" its a short book and it can answer every question you can think of about God

Ready.......
It doesn't matter.
God is the uncausable cause.
It is impossible to understand that He has been there forever.
The human mind cannot understand that.
So by asking where God came from is a question you know cannot be answered but you ask because you can ask.

God is the self-existent, eternal uncreated Being who transcends and precedes all things and in whom all things, space, matter energy, time and all things visible and invisible are contained.
Don't try to figure it out.

I don't know who created him, but I know he created the stuff to bang together in your big bang theory.

Maybe God has a God, but let's not go there until proof in our God is given. The we will proceed from there.
