I don't cut off the ends of mine, just poke it several times with a fork all the way around, coat it with a thin layer of olive oil (helps to keep from turning the skin to leather if you plan on eating the skin) and cook on high for about 15-20 minutes. If you don't have a rotating plate, make sure to turn it once or twice.
Edit: I noticed others were saying 3-5 minutes - I stick by 15-20 but thats for the great big Idaho Baking Potatoes. The ones that can feed like 4 people.

Best way I've found: scrub potato clean [so you can eat the peel] poke about 4 or 5 holes with a knife-point in its skin, dunk it in water--and wrap it in a piece of waxed paper, folding it up so the potato is in a little package. Depending on wattage of your microwave and size of potato: mine is a 900-watt nuke, so a big potato takes 6-1/2 minutes to be just right. Leave it wrapped in the wax paper and keep warm somewhere, or put it unwrapped on a tin in a 200 degree oven while you fix the rest of the dinner.

sure - just wash it, poke a couple of hole in the skin and microwave it on high for about 4 minutes, let it set for 4 minutes and then microwave it for a couple of minutes more. Plus newer microwaves often have a preprogrammed potatoe button that will make it even easier

No, it does not taste the same as if you bake it in the oven. In the oven, it bakes and tastes like baked potatoes you get in a restaurant. A microwave steams the potato and gives it a completely different texture... not nearly as good as a baked potato in the oven.

i have always made them in the microwave, be sure you poke a few holes in them with a fork and make sure they are uniform in size. place on a paper towel, cook on high for 5 min. turn over and cook another 5 min. remove from oven and wrap in foil and let rest for 5 min. i do them this way when i'm using BBQ then throw them on grill still in foil. corn on the cob is good done in the microwave as well, only you have to husk them first, wash under running water to remove hairs ,then wrap in saranwrap and cook 5min turn over, cook another5 min ,let rest in wrap until ready to serve.

I once baked a potato in the microwave and it caught on fire. Not just smoke, real flames. So I wouldn't set the oven on high and I wouldn't leave it unattended.

yes as long as you poke some whole in the potatoe with a fork or something, if not, the potatoe might explode in the microwave
