I have shortness of breath for little things that I do. I am only 23 years old, and am planning to get back on the excercise horse. Any ideas on what I can do to get my stamina and lung capacity up. I quit smoking and have been successfully nicotine free for 10 months with NO cravings. Woo-hoo!! Please help. Thanks.

Swim, swim, swim. It is easy on your body and great for your lungs. Even short bursts of swimming will help.
If you can't swim, try playing basketball or soccer. If sports are not your thing, then do a weight training station circuit. Actually, anything you do to make you breath heavy will help you increase your stamina and lung capacity. So, I guess, after re-reading your question, I'd say just start exercising. Just start slow and build as your body allows.

To get the initial difficulty out of the way, I'd suggest doing some HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training). What this entails is running for about a minute at full speed-- as fast as you can (sprinting) and then jogging/walking at a comfortable pace for two minutes. Do this about 8-10 times for two to three weeks. This won't KILL your lungs, because of the rest time, but it will kick them into high gear.

Afterwards, I'd suggest you start going into longer-endurance runs. Maybe three or four miles over the course of a half hour, non-stop-- your lungs should be able to handle it after a few weeks of HIIT.

you just do cardio and increase the time for a few minutes every week till you get to the desirable time of 45min.
your shortness of breath comes from being out of shape.
