You see references to this idea all the time. Christian theocracy. They take over, kill off the non-believers,etc. What kind of wacko paranoid conspiracy thing is this? How many atheists actually believe this, and of those who don't,how did this particular urban legend get started. Any idea? Please,be courteous. I'd really like to know how this one got started.

Never ask an atheist a simple direct question and expect an answer even remotely related to the question. obviously a fundamentalist serving as president does not constitute a forcible take-over of the government, abolition of the present form or anything else, nor is he putting non-believers to death. In any event,he'll be out of office in a year or so. Could somebody just give me a direct answer? And yes,I read the paper. I don't see anything about fundies "forcibly" imposing their beliefs via public edication or anything else. i don't know where you're getting this stuff from, but i know paranoia when I hear it. Also, for all the good athiest's professed "concerns" about GB do don't have anything to say about the way he's surrounded himself with jewish neo-cons,now why is that?

1. There is always a tension between theism/Christianity and atheism.

2. There are Christian fringe groups who actually believe that we should have a theocracy, despite the fact that God establishes the Church and the State to have different functions for his people and to operate in different arenas, and these groups completely ignore the history of the church that when it becomes caught up in Statism, it loses its purpose and is harmed severely in the process, and does much harm.

3. Those 2 points give adequate ammunition for atheists (and Christians for that matter) worried about the issue of theocracy

Where did you get such an idea?

I do not believe that Fundies are plotting to overthrow the government. I do believe, as they have stated many times, that they think this is a 'Christian nation' and that the laws should reflect 'Christian values'.

They have succeeded somewhat in that ambition as it is indeed illegal in 49 states for homosexuals to marry. That is one example of Christian doctrine making the law books. We Atheists simply oppose that concept. Laws should not be based on the tenets of any religion but on what is best for all people of the nation.

As far as killing off the non believers, I think you made that up. You are the one who actually sounds paranoid.

I'm not sure how many take it seriously that they are actually plotting revolution. But it is very scary indeed the extent to which fundamentalists and those who make nice with them are influential in the current government. I really do not worry about a revolution or even a coup, but back-room influence worries me no end. Remember we have a presidential election coming up, and those who can make major contributions to campaign funds have more influence now than ever.

For a start, they cant be christians if they're force ably taking something over. Second - Jesus told his disciples to learn first to control themselves and thats all they need to control (lead by example). Words of war are an abomination to intrinsic christian being. War mongering has its drawbacks - bleeding self spirituality (spiritual growth) is one of them - being fearful is the other. Religion is a way of controlling the masses - I can safely bet you that most war lords in the western world will cite "God" or "for the betterment of all that is God fearing and wholesome as their motivation - the residual effect of war is money - have a war - take the "booty".
Pirates knew it and so do politicians except pirates do it up front.

Well, there's the Project for the New American Century, the stated aims of Patrick Henry College, the manner by which the White House gave shelter to its current fundie incumbents... how far do things have to go before we're stopped being called paranoid?

You haven't been listening to those evangelicals yourself?
But many christians think all atheists are moral-less killers, killing unborn babies and stuff like that, not worthy to be a US citizen, and less trusted than gays and muslims.
Fundamentalists take the bible literally, and it's just this that scares atheists, because that booklet of toilet paper prescribes to kill us. We don't like that.

It's not so much that. There is a general fear that religious fundalmentalists are gaining too much influence in government, which can only lead to a reduction in religious freedom and more tolerance for christian-inspired terrorism.

If you want to know where this fear came from, read the news.

Nobody says they'll kill off all the non-believers. I don't know where you're getting that shite from.

The current American administration are either Fundies or are pretending to be in order to appeal to Fundies. (Probably the latter). So you're not far off now.
