Because lightning tends to strike objects that are taller than the surroundings, and because many churches have steeples, they also have lightning rods to try to reduce the possibility that lightning would strike the steeple and catch the building on fire.

Because they do not want the church to be struck by lightning and to burn down. There is this thing called nature. God created it. Sometimes, when it rains, lightning occurs. Lightning is dangerous. It can kill people. It can burn buildings

When God created nature, He did not say that He would suspend these laws at will. That would go against the very thing He created.

According to the Dictionary of Word Origins by John Ayto, the origin of the English word "steeple" comes from a German word "staup" meaning a high place or high tower. I am often amazed when tracing English word origins that the roots of many modern church words seem to bring back remembrances of Scriptures in the Bible like the following:

Woe, woe to you! says Yahweh-that you also built for yourself a shrine, and made a high place for yourself in every street. You built your high places at the head of every road, and made your beauty to be abhorred. You offered yourself to everyone who passed by, and multiplied your acts of harlotry! Ezekiel 16:24,25

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Eph. 6:12
