I have heard that once your gas light comes on and your car reads empty that you have at least another 20 miles in the reserve before your car gives out. Is this true?

Depending on make/model of car, 20 miles would be normal if not on the low side - take a can of petrol with you and drive till it stops, then you will know. The only risk is you might suck up any muck in the bottom of the petrol tank - could block carbies/jets etc...

Each car is different. On my car, in city, I have about 25 miles left. On highway, I have about 31 miles left. The only way to know is note when the light comes on then drive until the car runs out of gas.

It depends on the veh. Most are supposed and i mean supposed to have at least 1 gallon of gas when the light first comes on... I drove a car in England which had a 4 gallon reserve and the light came on when there was 4 gallons left... over 100 miles of driving left....
To be honest.... if you let the car get that low it pulls dirt and all sorts of gunk from the tank into the fuel system... It can damage the fuel pump and your fuel injectors or carb depending on the age of the veh...

For most cars, when the light FIRST comes on it means you have about a gallon of gas left in the tank. How far you can go with that gallon depends on the real MPG rating of the particular car you're driving. Still, it definitely means get it to a gas station ASAP.

The big advantage of a car is time and convenience. However, it's a big cost disadvantage to have and run a car. Take a look at your financial situation and if you can comfortably afford a vehicle, it's up to you if you want to keep it. If you find that you have to make many other financial sacrifices in order to keep the car, public transit may be your best option.

Check your owner's manual, and your personal experience with miles per gallon.

My car owner manual says that when the gas gauge gets to the red line, the car is good for 12 miles.

But that's when it was brand new. I figure somewhat less now.

It depends on the car. Maybe 1-2 gallons in reserve. I don't know, I never get that low.

All cars are different, but I would agree that you've got at least 20 miles in there.

That would all depend on the vehicle, obviously a larger vehicle would get less mileage and it also depends how much in town driving you are doing. But for the most part that is true.
