I want to make some red currant jelly (I originally wanted to make Jam, but my grandmother has already tried it and said it was just seeds and not very delicious), but I don't think we have any jelly specific jars. Can I use heavy duty tuberware to hold the jelly? Plus, how much is considered a "serving" when you make Jelly? And also, I have a family of 4, so how many servings should I make?....Oh, and any tips for making Jelly?

If you mean Tupperware, then no, you can't use it for making jam. The jelly and jam making process includes putting the jars of jam/jelly into boiling water and keeping them there for a specific length of time. This would warp, if not melt, the Tupperware. You need specific jelly jars with the two part lid so when the jelly/jam in the jars expands during the boiling the air can escape without the jam leaking everywhere. Before you try it you should really study up on the process.

Check out this site (http://www.pickyourown.org/jam.htm) it has step by step and pictures.

Plastic isn't such a good idea because you will need to boil them to seal the container to prevent contamination. They typical jelly/jam jar is between 6 & 8 oz.(jars are usually avalable at most grocery stores) You can find many recipes at all recipes.com for easy first time jellies.

#1 tip - sterilise jars and lids thouroughly and let air dry to prevent contamination - if you don't you will get bacteria fast and ruin a full days work.

Good Luck!

I wouldn't use Tupperware as you need to sterilise what you put the jam into eg boiling container for 5 minuetes (otherwise it won't keep for long). I wouldn't do this with your Tupperware as they will warp. Go to the local craft store as they would probably have glass jars you can buy, then sterilise them as I mentioned above.
