if you do lose any weight it will all be water and it will be gained back as soon as you regain normal eating habits.

the body does not metabolize fatty acids at a high rate when the body is in starvation mode. starving the body is the exact opposite of what is needed for there to be accelerated fat loss

Well first of all you are going to lose weight; there is little doubt about that. How much you are going to lose depends on what your body type is like now (thin, normal, heavy, or obese) but you should lose weight.

There is a difference between fasting and starvation. Starvation results from food being denied to a person whose reserves have been exhausted, and, in its extreme stages, leads to death. Fasting, on the other hand, is a period of rest and renewal with a potential for remarkable benefits with the body using its stored reserves as food.

You are also going to see a definite decrease in energy and you'll start feeling weak after a week of nothing but water.

I don’t necessarily know what you trying to do with this water fast but even during the Islamic fast (Ramadan) from the first light of dawn until sunset. they do not eat, but between that they do. Just going cold turkey and not eating for a week is going to do some serious damage to your body for the time being (again, loss of energy etc). Occasionally, it is necessary to break the fast before these signs manifest themselves (tiredness etc). A sudden fall in blood pressure; a rapid, feeble and irregular pulse; a disturbing dyspnea (difficult breathing) may indicate that the fast should be broken. Your attitude and emotional stability are factors that cannot be ignored. If you feel unwilling to continue the fast or becomes excessively worried and anxious, the fast may have to be terminated.

I should also inform you of the fact that the Catholic Church has also promoted a Black Fast, in which in addition to water, bread is consumed. Typically, this form of fasting was only used by monks and religious who practice mortifications and asceticism, but all Catholics are invited to take part in it with the advice and consent of their Spiritual Director (Wikipedia).

Hope this helps...just know that a fast for 10 days is a long time....

I've done a water-fast for eight days, for the same reason, twice in the last two or three years. I did lose weight during the fast, not a lot, maybe seven to ten pounds. And yes, it came back quickly, although slower the second time because I started eating little bits at a time. The biggest thing is, be careful when you break the fast. You'll feel like gorging yourself on lots of heavy, greasy food, but don't do it - you'll be so miserable! After your digestive system hasn't done anything for ten days, you'll need to start eating slowly, little bits at a time. I hope you are blessed! Also, don't plan a lot of strenuous activities during this time, because you'll find that you lack energy after the third day or so!

From a health standpoint, 'water fasting' for 10 days is not good for you. Luckily, as an American, you have the choice to ignore the health concerns.

When you stop eating your metabolism slows down to conserve energy and fat stores. You won't gain weight but you may start to retain water. If you keep your excercise level as it is currently and you're not consuming sugary and/or salty liquids, you should lose weight.

You gain weight when you consume more calories than you burn. So long as you're burning the same or more calories than you're taking in, you won't gain weight. You may find you even LOSE the water weight once you start eating again.

BTW, I don't see how not eating would get you closer to God.

Hope this helps!

Hey
I did a 40 day juice fast for spiritual reasons....even though mine was longer...I did lose alot of weight but my metabolism was all messed up coming off it and I gained weight and alot more. The weight gained can be lost by healthy eating and exercise so don't worry if you will gain weight with the fast....with 10 days you should be fine...Just remember the reasons why you are doing it...and remember to break your fast slowly..
God bless!

Um...I'm glad you are concerned. This isn't healthy.

To answer your question, you will probably lose a lot of weight quickly (not fat, but water weight and muscle), but after your fast you will gain it all back (and then some...what you gain will be fat).

Most of the weight you lose will be primarily water. I would discuss this with your Dr. first.
