None of the above are correct.

In actuality, he didn't pose for that painting. The painting wasn't really of him. The artist, Jacques-Louis David, painted it from memory and loosely based on another sketch of Napoleon's face.

Napoleon was actually impressed with the painting.

Napoleon however, never stood with his hand in his pocket as steyroetypically portayed. His favorite pose to stand in was with his two hands holding one another behind his back. This is commonly shown in paintings and is very accurate.

As this painting in one of the most famous, it is unfortunately misleading. Napoleon did not have a deformed hand and did not exhibit signs of stumoch cancer until much, much later. Those are urban legends surrounding him.

Most importantly: he didn't pose for the painting, and he didn't have his hand in his pocket.

It was fashionable at the time for gentlemen to stand in that way. Hidden in his jacket, like in many famous paintings of him. That was just a popular painting pose at the time. He did NOT have ulcers, itchy skin, or a deformed hand. Those statements are misnomers and they are not true. It simply was fashionable, that's it! Another misnomer is that he was extremely short....not true, he was an average height for that time period.

Because Napoleon had stomach cancer and constantly suffered severe abdominal cramps from it. In order to do portraits back then took many sessions and he had to stand in pose while the artist did the painting.
