You confuse two separate issues. The Rapture with Death/and the afterlife. The Rapture is part of the apocalypse and has to do with how the Christians view the end of the world. Those dead in union with Christ hence the martyrs will rise (heaven) first. The others are left on earth to deal with the anti-christ and after the trials and tribulations if they are deemed "heaven-worthy" will be present upon Jesus Christ Glorious Awakening and return which will hold the kingdom for supposedly 1,000 glorious years.

The Bible clearly teaches that those who are in Christ are spiritually in paradise, ie. the thief on the cross.
You can also rest assured that this scripture also nails home the fact that salvation through Christ is the only way and the only requirement.
this throws out any argument that Baptism must be physically done to be saved.
The body will not be transformed until Christ returns, and the mystery of that time, if Jesus said that God would not even tell him, how can man ever have the audacity to think they could guess or suggest it to anyone else.
So, to answer your main question, the dead in CHrist rise physically at that time. Their spirits are already in paradise.

I am not a Christian and I do not pretend to have the answer, but I do have what I believe to be a very good point. If you read all of the other answers think you will understand mine better. The bible is interpreted in an uncountable number of ways and so even among Christians there are disputes as to what happens after death. A Baptist might consider himself a true Christian but then so does a Catholic. Their interpretations of the bible are not the same though both believe their soul will be saved.
Now I am going to expand a bit out the actual question just so you can see my point a little clearer. A Muslim believes when he/she dies Allah(their God) will judge them. In India the Hindu's believe the most holy people are reincarnated. And I could name all sorts of other beliefs but I strongly believe that what ever you believe and is what will happen. If you honestly believe that your soul will be 'saved' then it will. Because I was raised a Unitarian Universalist my beliefs are very lose and unclear because I have had to find all of my answers my self with out the help of an all knowing book of answers to help me.(did you catch my sarcasm?)
As for 'true' Christians...they are supposed to live by what the bible tells them does it not tell them to eat Kosher and not wear clothes made of mixed materials so in my opinion there are no 'true' Christians.

Those who die before Christ returns are judged immediately and end up either in heaven or in hell, but they won't receieve their new bodies until Judgment Day, along with all the rest of humanity.

Those who are still alive on earth when Christ returns are covered by 1 Thess 4:16 ... and when Christ returns, he will be accompanied by all the angels, as well as all the saints who were already in heaven.

In this case, all those who are coming with Christ will appear to receive their resurrection bodies first, and then all of those on earth will be similarly transformed.

Both the just and the unjust get resurrection bodies, which will last for eternity.

Ecclesiastes 9:5 For the living know that they will die,
but the dead know nothing;
they have no further reward,
and even the memory of them is forgotten.

When Jesus died he was dead for three days until his Father Jehovah resurrected him. Jesus was God's only begotten Son and he even feel asleep in death. Jesus always referred to death as sleeping.

1 Thessalonians 4
14We believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. 15According to the Lord's own word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left till the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep

Which mean we believe Jesus Christ is with God The Father intersessing for The Believers

many people think they are going to heaven. not true. they are going into hell. hell is the common grave (Sheol) Jesus will resurrect us and we will live on a paradise earth that Adam and Eve lost. our love ones are only sleeping. looking forward to seeing my husband again. Jesus resurrected his friend Lazarus and if Lazarus was in heaven, he would of said so. Jesus Christ knew Lazarus as not in heaven. people need to read Genesis chapter two verse 7. we are the soul, so when we die our soul dies also.

1 Thessalonians is talking about the end of the Great Tribulation. At the Second Coming. There will be new Christians who were persecuted and perhaps died of natural causes who are dead in Christ. They missed the Rapture and the mid trib rapture.

He gathers them before the occurance stated in Zechariah 14.

If I am wrong then I get to be raised when His Second Coming occurs. No big deal, the crux of it is: I get to be with Him.

Moises,
The Christians will be in Abraham's Bosom to await the Judgment of Christ. (Read about the Rich man and Lazarus.) They will be taken into heaven afterwards. Have a great week.
Thanks,
