hi there, it would really depend on which base you are going to live............I have lived in a few base houses and whilst not the Ritz.........not that bad really.

Most bases have a web site so once you know where he is going to be posted / stationed you can look on line and see what would be available to you.

Best bit of advice I would give is ENSURE that everything is perfect before you move in as they are super fussy when you leave..........my floors where a mess when I moved in [hubby had done the inspection] and I left them good but they wanted them at a high gleam................

Also as for living on or off base that would depend on your BAH etc etc if in the local area you can get a good / nice place for what you get in BAH then I would consider it BUT I know that many wives like the security of living on base when the men are gone on deployment...........it all depends what works for you best...

Also would suggest that you do a yahoo search for wives on line groups in the area that you will be living in as they will give you a heads up of places to AVOID.............

Best regards and welcome to the Navy, feel free to email me off site if you want more direct info...............

It depends on the base.... some are much better than others. There is a website to see pictures from any base, but I forget the name, you can google it, it's really easy to find (navy one stop or something similar) Navy Housing is going through a "privatization" meaning the navy contracted out housing to a third party at most bases, and they are building much nicer houses. Living on base can be good though, you don't have to pay utilities- so at least take a look at the houses, you can always say no. I currently live in housing in washington state, and this is some of the nicest housing that I have seen. Good luck to you!

It depends on the base you are at some are better than others. When he joins his rank is low so he gets the worse of the housing. And some bases have different housing areas and they can be good or bad. While i was deployed for 6 months my car was kept in the parking spot outside the kitchen window and 2 service people broke into it and since they couldnt steal it the destroyed it and that was on base. And when you go to move out they inspect it and no matter how hard u clean it aint good enough they offer a company to hire to clean it and bam it passes coincidence i dont think so. So after those fun times i said never again would i live on base housing.

Girl I do not think there can be made such a distinguishing whether they are good or bad. I have been living with my serving husband over seas. All military personell from all branches live on a base. Does not matter whether you're Air Force, Navy, Marines. What does matter is your husband's rank. The rank sometimes determines better housing and more money to pay for housing. So if your hubby is a Colonnel for an instant, than he would get better deal of housing on base . So it all depends how good military installation's take care of their housing property's. There is bad or there is (family services) they will tell you what you two will qualify for. Also most likly you will be put on a waiting list .

You'll have to register, they clear you through DEERS, but you can look up all bases and see pics and find out what the housing market is like and anything else you may need to know.

Housing is not usually all that great, but some bases have nice housing, some don't. A lot of bases have been going through remodeling, so you may get lucky and have a remodeled home. Housing is old, although there are some bases that have fairly new housing (as in it was built in the last 10 years.)

What bases are you guys considering?

He is authorized housing on the Marine Base, just as if he were stationed on a Navy Base. They also have a Housing Office just like the Navy, tell him to get his lazy *** down there and talk with them!

As varied as the houses in any city. It depends on the time of development of the post. Much of the older housing is stucco and wood floors with small bedrooms and steam heat. The newer housing is has all the happy stuff that you will find in most condos or town homes. The higher the rank the nicer the stuff.

Enjoy

My son's in the Navy and he and his wife haven't, and will NEVER, live on a base (and he's an officer). They would rather live in town "so he can pretend he's not in the Navy on weekends". Their housing allowance is enough to pay for an apartment off base. He's stationed in Japan, and even lives off the base there.

If you've seen public housing then you've seen military housing. Only, military housing is clean and crime free.

They tend to have small bedrooms with little closet space, even the master bedroom will be small.

Here's a picture from Patuxent River Naval Air Station in Maryland.

This web page has various picures of housing at Norfolk, Va. Each area, enlisted and officer, has it's own link on the page.
