Funny thing you should ask this. I answered it in part in my blog a few days ago:
They are contributing a lot to their own defense but are also at battle with our enemy Al Qaeda.
For the answer, see my blog article "The Surge"

Also of note is the article "The Regional Webs of Entanglement" which demonstrates why other countries in the area are attempting to undermine a stable Iraq.

Where have you been all your life girl? Its extremly important that we help the Iraqi people to stay safe and free! Everyone now a day's scream we need to get out of there. Our troops need to go home. But even I am a convert of believing that if we did just that, that what the terroists would want us to do. Than the same dictatorship, tyranny and killings would go on.The Iraqi government is not as stead fast as it just told the United States this week. His Minister made clear that we could go out any time we wanted too. But if we really did that we would have an eas way of getting Terroists back in. We would probably have some dictator appear of no where, and all good things that we tried to accomplish would be in vein. Not too mention all the billion's of US dollars spent on the war would be for nothing! That would be so stuppid!

The main, public mission in Iraq ended when Saddam was hung. That doesn't mean that there isn't any more profit to be made by government contractors, and you might recall that Bush said we will not leave as long as he is President. It's because the people who put him into office are getting fabulously wealthy supplying the goods and services being used in Iraq.....Casualties? Who cares! They're all getting rich while the getting is good.

you make it sound as if they are not trying to fight their own war, its gonna take a little time, they are new to all this, we have to make sure that when we leave we do not have to go back, so until the Iraqi police are ready we will remain their to train them

we are trying to let the iraqi's take over their country by giving them the stability of a strong enough government not to get taken over by some crazy person like hitler or sadam hussein.
