It's not the only dog I have seen do it, infact lots of dogs I know do this. They always go for the wheels.

To them the vacuum is a monster that makes a lot of noise and your dog is trying to protect you from said monster. and this goes with lawn mowers and anything that vibrates and make a noise. they think it is a monster because the sound and vibration hurts their ear a bit, and because it hurts them it will hurt you as well. so he thinks...."I must protect mommy and daddy"

My dog does that too. I think he thinks he's defending me. He plants his feet, lowers his head, bristles his fur and barks like he's gonna tear the vaccum a new one! Then he goes for the wheels. Same for the lawn mower and weed whacker - he has only been close to these when they're turned off, but he still barks like crazy and tries to attack the wheels. I have to close the doggie door when I mow the lawn so that he can't run outside and try to defend me from my gardening tools.

I worked for an attack dog agency and we were warned that an infuriated dog will go for the legs (nip at the heels, etc) so the dog is trying to "disable" its opponent when it bites the wheels. There are sounds we can't hear and the trashing of the blades makes the dog fear for the safety of its pack (if it was afraid for just itself, it would run off, but it's bravely defending you and yours) so it attacks. It makes us laugh but the dog is deadly earnest and if we truly understood its panic we wouldn't fire up the machines around it.
My collie mix always tried to "save" my little girl from riding in the wagon because she was convinced it was carrying her off and she'd bite the wheels to stop it.

They don't like the sound it makes I have 4 dogs that all do that. They just want to stop the noise because they have very sensative ears. I do have one deaf dog that does that but she is 14 so it has become a habit for her to do that.

Don't let your dog chase the lawn mower. Keep him awya when you are mowing the lawn. THat's jsut an accident waiting to happen.

My guess would be that they feel like it's an intruder. Think about it, a loud, odd looking think is running over the places where they sleep, eat and play. They probably think of it as something trying to take over. Or, on the other hand, they could just want to play with it.

They are defending you. They don't know what this noisy creature is, but it's on their turf so they need to show it who is boss.
