The LDS hymn, "Choose the Right," was originally written by Joseph L. Townsend, 1849-1942, and the music was composed by Henry A. Tuckett, 1852-1918. The hymn has long been a standard to sing in the LDS Church.
From this hymn has come the abbreviation CTR that is often seen on rings, bumperstickers, even stationary. It is synonomous with doing the right thing at the crucial time when temptation is looming.
I am not certain if CTR is so popular outside Latter-day Saint circles. It certainly wouldn't hurt to gain more popularity with young and old.

I did not know that it was all that popular except among the LDS crowd. But Maybe others have adopted it also because it is a good motto to live by.
FYI- Choose the Right ot CTR is a motto that is taught to LDS children to remind them to make correct choices. They have a CTR ring that they can wear, sometimes adults wear them too, to remind them to choose the right. We teach our children that they have choices and they are the only person who can choose their behavior.
I have talked to others who are not LDS and love CTR because it is a great way to teach their kids to make good behavior choices.

LdS like jewelry like everyone else. However, the crucifix isn't kosher to us, so we came up with CTR instead. Besides, it's supposed to get others to ask about CTR which is a great lead-into a discussion about the Church ;)

Cuz it can stand for so many things
Catch The Returned (missionary)
Close The Refrigerator (my mom was always saying this)
Call To Repentance
Can That Rice (food storage)
Corrupt The Righteous (for exmormons)
It's fun to think of new uses for it.
But I don't think I've ever seen or heard it used outside of the LDS community.

It's a Mormon thing! Choose the Right is to Mormons as WWJD or What would Jesus do? is to the rest of the secular world. Go to deseretbooks.com and you can buy a ring that says that. See link below:

They have CTR rings made in silver in t he Desert Book store. One of the prophets sayings was "Do it" since christians have their saying "WWJD" what would Jesus Do. I guess the mormons had to have theirs "CHoose the Right".

I first saw it in Utah in the 1960's, but have since seen it everywhere - like wwjd? I always thought it was lds in origin, but I don't know really - that's just where I first saw it. They have rings they hand out to primary kids and now other jewelry items as well.

I've never heard the term outside of my mormon upbringing, I was under the impression it was just a mormon thing, so I would think many people haven't heard of it (as indicated by some of the answers you're getting)
