My answer is probably going to seem like total heresy to most Christians, but here it is anyway....it's illegal - that's the ONLY reason I see.

If you look at the substances from just a chemical perspective and what they do to the body - I'd have to say MJ is better than alcohol.

If you look at the substances from the perspective of what they can do to a family, I'd have to say MJ is MUCH better than alcohol.

I think if we legalized it, we'd have much less crime and think of the taxes the gov't could collect from the regulation of the industry!

MJ is just better than alcohol - period - however, neither is needed.

Actually, alcohol is NOT widely accepted by all Christians. But to some Christians it is. However, the bible teaches us that if what we permit causes another Christian to stumble in their faith towards God, then things like drinking alcohol should be done in the privacy of our own home out of their site, or better yet, stopped all together. But if God's word doesn't forbid it, and our conscience doesn't condemn us, then we can drink alcohol. But not all Christians have the same thinking on this issue, which is okay.

On the issue of marijuana, one reason why Christians will not partake is because it's against the law. But even if it wasn't, almost all born-again Christians would rather stay away from mind-altering drugs. If you did an extensive study of the word sorcery, marijuana could even be equated to sorcery, which God forbids.

But that leads us back to alcohol. Isn't it mind altering? Yes, if too much is consumed. When Jesus and the apostle drank wine, did they drink to get drunk? No. And as Ray Patterson pointed out, some churches (but not all) use wine in communion.

The biblical bottom line truth is that drinking alcohols is not forbidden by God. Getting drunk or high is.

NOTE to Fred: It's not that Christians aren't allowed to think. It's that many of today's Christians don't want to find the time to read their bibles and allow it to guide them. Therefore, by default, they take the words of another human behind the pulpit as gospel truth. He could be feeding them spiritual rat poison and they wouldn't know it without reading their bibles

A problem the christians have always had with banning alcohol is that they drink it together at the communion. There is an obvious reverence to wine because of that. Indeed, groups who held communion with water have been condemned. The Second Great Awakening advocated abstinence, and movement that arised from it still do. But it remains an indulgence christians are not very eager to let go of. Thank Jesus for the Trappists... best beer brewers in the world are still monks. But indeed, if he had said "smoke this, it is my breath", the world might be a bit more chilled out.

hmm maybe because drugs are illegal and alcohol isn't?! that's probably a good reason enough. Jesus drank wine, but never got drunk. its okay to drink alcohol, but if you get drunk that is causing harm to your body. a glass of wine or beer every now and then wont hurt you. But marijuana no matter how much, will cause you to lose brain cells. Alcohol has been proved to be very good for you. it decreases your likeliness to have cancer and heart failure. However too much of it can cause liver failure and if you get behind the wheel it could be dangerous. weed has worse side affects than alcohol and its illegal. i think that's the best reason.

Tradition.

Christianity has to accept alcohol as we know that Jesus approved of it. He made it at the marriage feast, it was served at the Last Supper.

The "miracle of the spliff" is only found in the apochrypha.

Seriously though there are sensible reasons around tradition. Both are dangerous drugs, but with the traditional drug of alcohol we have built up a great deal of cultural norms that control it.

Before modern water purification programs it was common for people to drink alcoholic beverages. The consumption of wine or beer was common at meal time. Alcohol was consumed more out of necessity than the personality adjuster that it is in today's society.

Why is alcohol so much more widely accepted by everyone? It's far more dangerous than any other drug. It's the most widely abused and it kills the most people. Most assaults and murders involve alcohol at some quantity.

As a Christian, I have no problem putting marijuana on the same level as alcohol. However, it remains illegal, unlike alcohol. Was a time, alcohol was illegal, too

I don't accept alcohol, and a lot of people I know don't. Any mind/mood altering substance should be stayed away from, including caffine and nicotine. It's just not healthy

I'm a Christian and I think BOTH are idiotic. Jesus drank wine back then though. He just never got drunk. It's not wrong to drink as long as you don't get drunk.
