Also are there any start up fees ......if so, how much is that? Do you really get good discounts with AAA (saving money)? Thank you!

As far as I remember there are no startup fees. However, they do have a funny "extra month" (or is it 2?) before you policy actually lapses. Which means that if you are a penny pincher sign up and then when it comes time for renewal don't actually do so until the extra two month period is over.
As far as savings at other places (e.g. hotels, restaurants) you can contact AAA directly to see where they apply. But a better approach might be to see the kind of places you go to normally (hotels, etc) and see if they give a discount for your AAA membership. If the places you like don't honor AAA then it's not going to save you anything.
My experience is only with their "basic" service.

I was a AAA member before I was an employee, and I got my membership b/c I was seperated from my husband and didn't know who to call in the event I broke down somewhere. I didn't care about the discounts at the time...I just needed someone to call & bail me out if needed. I also ordered a ton of maps, the $6 maps, for free...I've got about 10 of them for various places. (There's $60 right there and the membership is $49?)
I have never used the road service before, but I have used the discounts many many many many many times and it has more than paid for itself. Let's see I save 10% alone at Target.com, car rentals, hotels, and restaurants.
I no longer pay for my membership since I work for them, but I see the value of it every day.

I have the premium which includes 3 upto 100 mile tows each year. Cost about $120. Paid for itself on the first tow. They have different service levels. Look on their website www.aaa.com.
