Can you die from acid reflux? I mean, I realize that if that goes on for a long time untreated, you can develop problems with the esophagus...that is not what I am meaning. You see, before I was on zantac for it...there were two times that I woke up and it burnt so bad and I was literally gasping for breath. I thought I was going to die! I asked my doctor about it and she put me on zantac and said that I couldn't die from it, but that it was something else( can't remember what she said). I guess I find it hard to believe because I thought I wasn't going to catch my breath and was literally on the floor on my hands and knees...woke up not being able to breathe and the taste in my mouth was horrible! My whole throat burnt for awhile after that. So, have you ever heard anyone say you can die from that? Thank God I am on meds for it now. Thanks everyone.

You can aspirate on your stomach acid or vomit- which can cause a whole heck of a lot of problems. That's when it gets into your lungs.
"The most familiar symptoms of acid reflux include heartburn and acid regurgitation, but in some patients, acid reflux harms more than the gastrointestinal tract -- it also injures the respiratory tract. Acid aspiration into the lungs damages the epithelial barrier and initiates acute inflammation, resulting in asthma exacerbation, chronic cough, and in the most severe cases, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), a life-threatening condition."

You would not die from an attack like that, you'd throw up the acid and breathe normally again. The way you could die is if it is untreated for some time, cancer of the esophagus can appear, and that can be very dangerous.

I also have acid problems, and I went to the dr. thinking I was having a heart attack because the acid was making my chest hurt beneath the breast bone. We did some tests, and it's just the acid. Nexium was the answer to my prayers. It works so well, I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I won't have acid problems. YEAH!!

Theoretically, it can eat away (it is acid, you know) at your esophagus. But anyone with a brain would seek medical attention before it got to that.

What have you done to resolve the underlying casue of your acid reflux? Such as chocolate, onions, peppermint, coffee, high-sugar foods, high-fat foods, spicy foods, citrus products, tomato products, alcohol, tobacco. My acid reflux went away completely once I stopped drinking alcohol.
