Benzoyl peroxide bothers my face, too. I can't use it.

My son uses that expensive treatment proactive. When he's diligent about using it, his face is as soft as a baby's butt.

I have noticed that when my son spends a lot of time at the pool, his acne clears up. Is it the pool chemicals, or the exposure to the sun? IDK but it works.

You're gonna think I'm crazy with this one, but it is the most effective and least expensive cure I could give you. It comes from China.

Take off anything metal--rings, watches, whatever. Take your right palm and put it on your left calf. Do the same with your left hand and right calf. Sit there and watch TV or something, the longer you can do it, the better (at least 1/2 hr, but hour is better). In a day or two you'll have amazing results. The only caveat is that if you quit doing it, eventually your face will return to normal.

You have all my wisdom grasshopper. Go forth in faith and knowledge.

A lot of people are super sensitive to benzoyl peroxide. Initially, it does tend to make you break out more, but for some it actually can aggravate the condition. You might try switching to an acne product that is 2% salicylic acid based. Start using it every other day and gradually increase until you are using it twice a day. It can cause redness and dryness, so don't overdo it in the beginning. And use a mild cleanser---NO scrubs!

I totally agree with swangirl. Benzoyl peroxide makes my face "burn" and turn a bright red color (like a bad sunburn). In contrast, 2% salicylic acid doesn't bother me at well and is pretty effective.

As for natural cures that are cheap...I don't know of any topical compounds, but obviously washing your face often actually helps quite a lot. Also, a tip my college roommate gave me is to change your pillowcases more often so you aren't always "rubbing your face" in the oil from the previous nights. Even if you don't change them, you can flip them over between washes and use the 'fresh' side. Believe it or not, this really seemed to help me (if you think about it, that's 6-8 hrs a night that your head is lying on the pillow!).
