Yes, it does, but only in conjunction with other exercises - it trains and strengthens the muscles required for jumping. If you're trying to increase your vertical, I'd suggest using light ankle weights while jumping rope. You don't want anything too heavy that might cause shin splints, but light ankle weights will increase your jumping ability.

I'd also suggest reading about plyometrics.

Will jumping rope help your jump? Yes a little, but there are more effective exercises out there like weight training and plyometrics.

Jumping rope with ankle weights is almost completely useless!

Yes it does make it harder to get as high off the ground and it does make for a more difficult cardio workout. But the muscles doing the work in jumping (Glutes, hams, quads and calves) are ALL ABOVE the ankle weights. The work that these muscles do in jumping (bending into a squat then quickly straightening to propel the body off the ground) is all done before the weights even move. When you squat down to jump your legs are not lifting any additional weight until you have actually left the ground, therefore the weights have done nothing to make your legs work harder. So while weights on the ankles do make for a harder workout they are not strengthening the muscles doing the jumping.

A better option to make jumping rope more effective would be to take those ankle weights and attach them end to end to create a belt that you could wrap around your waist while jumping rope. Or even better, a weighted vest with a waist belt to take some of the load off of your shoulders. By jumping rope with the weights around your waist, the muscles doing the work will actually need to resist the extra weight while you are squatting down into your jump. Your legs will then need to propel your body weight and the additional weight off the ground while jumping.

I hope this helped answer your question. Good luck!

I agree with some of the other answers. Jump roping by itself will not increase your jump significantly. It will increase your jump, but not enough to really notice.
I keep suggesting working in the pool if you have easy access. Get about chest deep, crouch down and then jump. The water will act as resistance and will also cushion your landing for your knees and ankles. Do 10 jumps, take about 1 minute off and repeat. It is the old style pliometrics.

yes, jumping rope makes you jump higher. other ways you can try to make yourself jump higher is too:

star jumps ( jumping up with your hands in the air and your feet so they shape like a star.)

playing basketball: basketball has A LOT of jumping in it as in blocking shops, going for the tip-off, layups, or even just a shot to the basket.

jumping rope: try to jump high and fast like doing a double - jump once and swing the rope twice.

jump: you could just jump at home. set a goal. probably if you can touch the cieling (but not break it!) and each day jump about 5 times. not only will you be able to juump higher but you'll grow taller too.

follow my advice. its what i do. and now, i can jump higher than a person who is actually taller than me by a lot!

Yes. When I played college basketball (35 years ago) we used to jump rope for 5 straight minutes before and after each practice. Yes, it builds stamina, but it also develops your calf muscles like no other type of training. Not only does it develop strength but also quickness. Oh, yeah. Anyone who says jumping rope doesn't increase your vertical doesn't know about training.

Yes, Jumping rope will help to increase your vertical jump. By jumping rope its helps to strengthen your calf muscles. Try jumping rope on one leg 10-15 times then switch. This will allow the other leg to rest inbetween reps. Along with increasing the muscle you will be isolating the calf muscle on one leg which will make work harder along with help to increase your core muscles by trying to balance on one foot while jumping. Your calf muscles are one the fastest muscles able to recover, so you can work them harder than say your bicepts.

I badly sprained my ankle about 3 weeks ago. I was in a hurry going down the stairs, lost my balance and landed on a bad side of my left foot, causing my left ankle to be stretched going on the inside. The first 48 hours were excruciating and the pain was un-believable. I've never had a serious ankle injury before.

So I immediately treated it using the RICE method. The following day, the bruising and swelling were so horrible. I found out that I got a second degree sprain and immediately panicked after that. I had a football game on that week and it been looking forward to it because I've been training for rt. I had teammates that had similar injuries and it took them months to fully recover, some of them stopped playing altogether. So I kinda had a short-term depression because I can't imagine myself not being able to run and play sports anymore.

Because I was so desperate to recover again, I contacted a lot of people that I know who do sports and asked them if they had similar injuries. One friend of mine, from the boy's football team in my university, told me about H.E.M. Ankle Rehab. I got a copy 4 days after I got injured. I immediately read and followed what was instructed and felt improvement on the first day. I was able to walk a bit, but I was in pain.

A couple of days after that, the swelling and bruising were subsid-ing significantly and on the fourth day, I was walking comfortably again. Although I've had felt a bit of stiffness, I continued doing what was instructed. My sister was surprised that I have recovered this fast. I told her about this book and was shocked on how effective the procedures were. I'm just so happy that this book was shared to me and how effective it is.

Heal your ankle fully & fast?
