I don't really have the money to go out and buy a version of Photoshop so I heard of this free alternative, gimp. But is it a good program? I've heard people say it is a powerful program almost as good as photoshop and others who think it doesn't even compare. What's your opinion? Please tell.

It depends on what you want to do with the software. Photoshop is by far superior, and anyone who tells you otherwise does not know Photoshop, BUT that doesn't mean it will be more useful to you for what you want.

Gimp is free, Photoshop is expensive. If all you want to do is fool around with pics out of your consumer-level digital camera, then Gimp will serve.

Why not start with Gimp and see if it will do what you want? It's free, so what have you got to lose? Some of the skills you learn in Gimp will translate into Photoshop if you ever need it.

You might also look into Photoshop Elements. About $100. It's like mini-Photoshop. Works well for many people.

Adobe Photoshop is the professional standard in image editing and manipulation and in my opinion can't be compared with Gimp.
However, Photoshop is expensive and its learning curve is hard if you're not used to work with images and image editors. So my advice is to start with PhotoFiltre Studio that is similar to Photoshop but is free, quite intuitive and has a friendly approach and an easier learning curve.

Good luck :)
