there's a muscle that runs along your trachea and esophagus. when you hiccup, it's having spasms. no one knows why or how to stop them for sure. there are various folk remedies, though. stopping oxygen from getting to that muscle stops them most often, but not always. that's why most remedies involve closing your mouth or holding your breath.

Hiccups are a spasm of the solar plexus causing a spasmodic inhalation with closure of the glottis accompanied by a peculiar sound ...hence HICCUP!!
It's not absolute as to what causes them but everyone will at some time in their life will get them!

Hiccups occur when your diaphragm involutnarily contracts. They usually occur for no reason what-so-ever. The Diaphragm muscle extends across the bottom of your ribcage.
