>>what does this man do and why is he so special?<<

The Pope holds the keys to the kingdom of Heaven, has the power to bind and loose, and has been charged by Christ with the feeding and tending of His flock.

Jesus gave the Apostle Peter the keys to the kingdom of
Heaven, the power to bind and loose, and entrusted him with the care of His flock (Matthew 16:19; John 21:15-17), making Peter the first Pope. The Apostles had successors (Acts 1:15-26). Benedict XVI is the current successor of Peter.

He is the head of the Catholic Church. He is supposedly infallible, and can forgive sins, like all the Catholic Priests. He recently declared that the Roman Catholic Church is the one true Christian Church, and that all other Christian Churches were nothing more than pale imitations of their Church. Isn't that just lovely ? I personally( meaning no malice) think the Pope is no better than you and I. God alone can forgive sins, or at least that's what my Bible says. Maybe the Pope doesn't believe the Bible. God will judge us ALL one day, including the Pope !

"Pope" is a title used for two Christian prelates - the head of the Catholic church being the most commonly known by this title (the head of the Coptic church also goes by the title of pope.)

The office of Pope in the Catholic church refers to the bishop who oversees the diocese of Rome. Because overseeing the church of Rome was the last job held by St. Peter before he was martyred, ancient church tradition has held that his sucessors hold his office of leadership.

As such, being the bishop of Rome makes the former Joseph Ratzinger, now known as Benedict XVI, the head of the Catholic church.

He is special because he holds jurisdiction over 1.1 billion Catholic faithful, and is a figure of both authority and unity in the church. He is alone among the Catholic bishops in having jurisdiction over not just a particular church, but the entire church on Earth. He holds the teaching office - or chair - of St. Peter, and as such can exercise, if he chooses to, the ability to speak "infallibly" on matters of doctrine and faith to the church. (Infallible means that he is protected from error.)

In practice, this ability is used very conservatively - only once, in fact.

The Pope or Supreme Pontiff is the Chief Shepard on Earth of the flock of JESUS CHRIST. The first Pope was Saint Peter the Chief Apostle of JESUS CHRIST. The Pope is the Bishop of Rome who's authority within the Church is infallible on matters of faith and morals. Our most recent Pope is Benedict XVI . .. formerly Cardinal Ratzinger . .. who succeeded Pope John Paul II . ..

I say so of the CHRISTian Church for we are all ONE BODY IN CHRIST . .. but this is particularly accepted fact in the Roman Catholic Church . .. though all CHRISTian Churches if they are of the BODY OF CHRIST must accept the TRUTH OF HIS CHURCH . .. In time, in HEAVEN all people will bow to the authority of JESUS CHRIST even if they don't recognize that authority upon the Earth . ..

LOVE your neighbor as yourself.
Amen.

+ The Pope +

John 21:15-17 states:

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."

He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."

He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.

Matthew 16:17-19 states:

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."

The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.

The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.

The Pope’s main roles include teaching, sanctifying, and governing.

He is the divinely appointed representative of Jesus Christ to the people of the world. He is the Vicar of Christ, the sole holder of the keys to the kingdom. And he is the key to Christian unity. The record speaks for itself in this regard. Christian Church under the Pope's divinely ordained authority - 2,000 years of unity in teaching, unity in belief, unity in worship and unity in administration (does the phrase "that they all may be ONE" ring any bells?). Christian tradition separated from the Pope's authority - 500 years of division, fragmentation, and doctrinal chaos.
