I just bought a bedset for college. The design is perfect (I'm very picky about my bed stuff) but the thread count is only 200. The comforter and sheets are rather scratchy. Is there anything I can do to make them softer?

The set is 100% cotton and I've washed it once already without it working.

You need to buy "modal" sheets from Bed, Bath & Beyond. Buy "pure beech modal" and not "Jersey Modal". They are the softest sheets I have ever felt and don't seem to be impacted by thread count (don't even think they mark thread count). Far better then even the 600+ thread count sheets that cost 5x more.

You should be able to get a queen size set for 60 bucks. Might sound like a lot, especially if you are in college, but I guarantee you it is money well spent and will give you the honor of having the best bed.

I dated a girl that introduced me to Modal sheets and I think I fell in-love with her because her bed was so comfortable. Once I ended the relationship I went out and bought a set myself.

If you don't want to let go of the sheets you have then use fabric softener and wash them a few times, always dry with dryer sheets.

You can try fabric softener, but chances are that won't work. They are probably a poly/cotton blend which will make it more scratchy than if it were 100% cotton. Also, the poly in a fabric is what causes it to pill up when you wash it, so you may end up with little pills on everything, which is worse IMO than just scratchy sheets.

I personally won't sleep on anything less than 400 thread count because I find anything under that to be scratchy - even 100% cotton.

You can wash them and use liquid fabric softener. But if they are only 200 thread count and scratchy, you'll probably have to wash them about 5-10 times before they get softer.

You can 'fluff' the comforter in the dryer with a dryer sheet, but you can lose the loft of your batting in the comforter if you beat it around too much. Cheaper bed linens usually aren't as soft when you first buy them.

You have to use fabric softener and put a couple of tennis balls in the dryer with them to help. If they don't soften up with that then get new sheets. New sheet should NOT be stiff and scratchy if you watch and buy the brand that you like. Sticks with ones that you know are not stiff and scratchy when you buy them.

Your thread count is working against you and really you can wash and wash them but they won't get softer, only more pebbly. Watch for sales or those great 20% off coupons at Linens n Things or Bed Bath & Beyond and buy at least a 350 count.

Depending on the thread count a good washing w/ fabric softener usually works

Wash them a couple of times before using them.....and use fabric softener.....or use the dryer sheets that soften fabric and make them smell nice and feel soft.

A cheap and easy way to soften sheets is to use about 1/2 cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle. It really DOES work.

What I like to do is to let them soak in the rinse cycle in the fabric softener overnight. I am not sure if this is possible for you though. If not try fabric softener in the rinse cycle and put in two or three fabric softener sheets in the dryer.

Liquid fabric softener should do the trick. Warm water wash too... and don't skimp on the fabric softeners. Somethings are worth the $$$$
