Gonna give an easy answer for one of the reasons (actually had to ask people about it for a final):
Corruption.
Look back to the time of Jesus. The Roman Empire (if you know history, you know about the corruption within it) was lead by the church. Jesus stood up to the corruption within the church (making money, etc.). This corruption still exists. If you ever visit the vatican, there's gold all over the place, basically a really expensive church. Do they really need all that stuff to pray?
So when people decide that they aren't going to follow this corruption anymore, some of them completely give up their beliefs (common thought - if the religion is corrupt, why should I believe it?)
I'm not saying this is the most common reason, just out of the people I asked, most of their reasons were closest to this.
Christianity is a joke, and being a "christian" means nothing. The actual "acceptance of Jesus as your savior" is what most christians would say is important, not having a title as a believer.
If you didn't see it yet, watch Dogma. Chris Rock says a lot of pretty important things that people really need to think about in that movie. And they more or less match up with things you will read in the Bible.

I'm not sure what turns most Christians to Atheists, but i know what made me decide to become an Atheist. Firstly it was the fact that the Christian mythology seemed utterly unrealistic to me in the same way the Greek mythologies may seem unrealistic to most people. I also saw many contradictions that I found myself unable to reconcile within the bible. Thirdly, I found this Christian god to resemble more closely a tyrannical dictator than than an all loving god on further examination.
All this is what made me become Agnostic really. I became an Atheist later through slow evolution of ideas and education throughout my life.

Rules and hypocrisy turn people away from Christianity.
Obedience to the Church and the teachings of God is hard to swallow. Many of the rules challenge human nature; for instance, monogamy is an important part of Christian marriage which contradicts our reproductive drive. Furthermore, some of the biblical laws and practices are outmoded, forgoing modern advancements and changes.
As evidenced in the media. Christians incur scrutiny due to their self-righteousness and hypocrisy. When another priest molest a child, an atheist grows in his convictions. Essentially, Christians expect unrealistic feats of moral conduct from others when they in of themselves cannot meet their own lofty standards.
Where a Christian sees liberation through the teachings of the Church, an atheist sees chains.

There were many, but I think it was mainly the idea that life here on earth is just a test to see who goes where in the afterlife. What's the point? Why not skip the middle man? After many years, I found Judaism. It's about *this* life and living it to its fullest!
Wazzamaddayou says: "Christianity actually requires some self-discipline and its not so easy, and they just dont want to even bother trying." LOL This from a Christian who follows Paul's teachings: No circumcision required, laws not necessary, no need to keep the sabbath holy, no accountability for one's own sins, no need to seek forgiveness from fellow man. And the list goes on and on and on. Chistian self-discipline! What a hoot!!!!

First was getting away from the church and getting a real world education and experince, opening my eyes to the bs of the world then wondered why is there all this hardship if the christian God is so "great". When I did go back to the church, partners an expriest so go figure, I was faced with a lot of contridictions that i was to blind to see before then all the dogma that made no sence.

Are you saying that "most Christians" become atheists or are you asking why most of those who do turn to atheists become that way?
I would say first "most" do not turn into atheists.
Those who do turn away from Christianity are letting the little minded people get them down and not finding the blessings of the faith. Understandable -- lot of loud, obnoxious people supposedly claiming great faith, but actually teaching hatred.
Not true Christians by any means. They have some big surprises coming up eventually!!!

No I am not an atheist....I am a Christian...the only way I can see if someone turns their back on Christianity is if they never knew Christ or established a true relationship with Him. They began to read the bible and their sinful nature began to show and they decided that it's eaiser to believe that it's not a God than to change their lifestyle.
I couldn't imagine turning my back on the One (Jesus) who has changed my life forever!

Because people do not want to be responsible for their actions. Being an atheist is easy - no consequences. Being a Christian takes commitment and you cant just do whatever you feel like.

Christians fall away and no longer believe for several reasons. John 6:60-68 tells us that many disciples no longer followed Jesus because of a hard teaching. This is still happening today. Many are saved but never come to believe because they reject the Word (Jude 1:5, 1 Corinthians 15:2, Hebrews 5:9).
Another reason is that things do not work out like we are told. The main reason for this is false teachings. Many do not teach what is written but what people want to hear according to 2 Timothy 4:1-4. Read John 14:1-24 and John 15:1-17 to see if you have actually come to know Jesus. Many will hear on the last day "away from me ,I never knew you" according to Matthew 7:21-27, because they never came to know Jesus. We have to come to know Him according to 1 John 2:3 and John 14:21, but this is not what is taught today. If we renew our minds with what is written in the Word, then things will begin to work out just like it is written in the Word.
Another group will simply fall away from repentance according to Hebrews 6:4-8. They may not stop going to church if they are getting something out of it like singing praise and worship music, playing sports, etc. They just never repent of their sins, and never stop sinning.

Well that's my story, and I can tell you that it was the attitude of superiority I encountered so much within Catholicism. On the macro and the micro scales. Hypocrisy is another reason, and the fact that I'm a realist. If you examine history closely enough, you'll realize that organized religion today - all of them - are just the result of thousands of years of oral tradition, embellishments, fear mongering, and greed. FEH!
