Guru is a person who has went through the same path as you as a regular human, but through his individual investigation has attained a state of wisdom(NOT knowledge, which can be achieved by a reader). Guru can put things in perspective, and explain rituals, everyday questions which you have personally found hard to find answer for.
Personal situation, I had questions about Truth, Food, certain religious rituals of different religions, or everyday habits, or something profound in religion or science. Of all the great souls encountered Vethathiri Maharishi was able to put things in perspective for me. From Dietary laws of jews, muslims to explanation of religion, and science(Gravity, Bio-magnetism, Magnetism, etc). He was able to explain the reason behind certain rituals which were performed for ages, and which need NOT be followed as it didn't make any sense.
For example, Widows in ancient Indian subcontinents were made to shave their head, not wear any flashy things(dress, jewelry, etc). I always wondered why, his explanation was: In olden days(when there was no Electricity) of nuclear families couples identified each other with noises of jewelry(anklets, etc) and the scented oils. After dark there was a faint lamp, lit the whole house. Everyone identified each other with noises of the jewels or scented oil. If a widow wears a white cloth, it is visible even in pitch black environment. So the physical harm, or invasion of personal space cannot be done. So as a measure of protection of women's sanctity, widows wore white clothes.
Another information about dietary laws of Kosher or Halal foods, He explained that bleeding the animal as soon as it is killed, avoids the bacterial infection(slows it down). As in the country or place of origin of the respective faith, it made sense to drain the carcass(of animal) of blood, before cooking or butchering. And also the similar reason to stop infection they didn't combine vessels which used to cook milk and cook meat to avoid cross contamination. Milk goes bad very fast in a arid, desert weather, so cooking meat spoils and gets someone else sick.
Veils were worn by women to ancient mideast to contain the stimulus given to the men(who were roaming in the desert). Just cover the source of stimulus which would cause physical, sexual harm being done.
God is Shiva or the nothing, it is all encompassing. It envelops the whole milky way at the sametime it(the space) is between the ever rotating electron. It is a yin and yang. Shakti is energy field around the Shiva the static, all pervading space.
These are the few explanations which made perfect sense to my questions. I was searching answers for all these questions, and of all people I've asked he was able to explain things in lucid manner.
When questioned by a seeker(spiritualist who was investigating truth), in a University questionaire as to where he has learned these topics in science, life, magnetism, etc. He was asked "Maharishi, which university did you attend to interpret, or propose these theories and philosophical explanations?" He replied he has been to the "City of Universe"(Just re-arranging the words of University). Such simplicity to profound questions motivates everyone to attain his stage of wisdom. He said everyone is equal in front of another, so he didn't believe in Idolisation of anyone, or any individual.
My blessings for you on your path of individual investigation of truth.

Have interaction with one self and believe. There is no need for any Guru or 'Maha Guru. Learning some thing is one thing where one may teach or coach but for religious and spiritual thing development no guru is needed. Gurus as a class are Mahagurus and purely business men they do not have any quality of sacrifice and devotion . All are moneyed and earns lot for them self's. Don't involve your self. Read Geeta and will find that you are on right path. See Ch.II -47-50. You will learn much that what the so called gurus can tough. Don't involve your self in such religious ,orthodoxies and rituals. You will be robbed of your money.

There is one. However, he does not want disciples.
(From: http://www.sriramanamaharshi.org/ )
Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharishi has this to say:
Grace and Guru
I have not said that a Guru is not necessary. But a Guru need not always be in human form. First a person thinks that he is an inferior and that there is a superior, all-knowing, all powerful God who controls his own and the world's destiny and worships him or does Bhakti. When he reaches a certain stage and becomes fit for enlightenment, the same God whom he was worshipping comes as Guru and leads him on. That Guru comes only to tell him that ‘God is within yourself. Dive within and realize.’ God, Guru and the Self are the same.
Make him the Guru.

Many persons have already told what I wanted to say. Now-a-days many fake persons in the name of GURU or SWAMI are roaming everywhere. You should be cautious about them. They are coming up like Mushrooms. You can not identify who is Real or Genuine Guru. It is very difficult.
So you have to cultivate the personality of a spiritual Guru in yourself. Initially you start with meditation as it is the only path lead to you the correct contact. You can read and read and read and understand Bhagawat Gita and its meaning and you will get a Divine Guru there. You can read Divine books and books on Gita to take you easily to the desired goal. Best of Luck-

Sorry to dissapoint you but there is No guru better than your own self. Open urself up to the divine vibrations ever present in the cosmos around you, be pure of thought, speech and actions, and seek the truth behind things. You every breathe is divine and fills you with the power of divine, awake to this reality and read, meditate & contemplate.
I personally do not believe in another human being as being a Guru, If he can, why can't I? I agree it sounds egoistic but see the truth behind it, someone who proclaims to be a Guru or someone who people treat as a Guru is as Human as you n me.
So seek the truth within and you shall transcend all.

Wherever u go and whatever ur religion everyone will say u will benefit if u pray with faith. Whenever u perform any ritual the pandit or any enlightened person will say it is matter of ur faith. I ve heard all religious orators saying have faith but nobody shows u the way to faith. I ve learnt,(I think so) that faith is developed by positive affirmations to urself about developments in ur life. Even if u r not well but say that u ve sound health and u will start healing. If u keep on saying that u r unwell then ur ailment will prolong. Likewise ur financial condition. If u focus on poverty then things will not improve but if u focus on income universe will pave way for enhancing ur income. For getting into habit of positive thinking, please read books on power of positive thinking and heal ur life. Then whatever u r looking for will come to u. Aum has rightly answered ur question. I ve just added a few tips for u, if u like please follow and feed back. When u r powerful urself, worthy Guru will come to u.

Sri Mata Amritanandamayi Devi "Amma" is a very genuine guru. I've been seeing Her for two years now and could not have asked for a better guru than Her. She is from Kerala, India and travels all over the world eight months of the year to make Herself available to all of Her children everywhere. She comes to the USA for two months every June and July and again for two weeks in November.
Amma is famously known as the hugging saint, but really She is much more than that. Her teachings which I have been studying are the best that I've ever read in the past 18 years of reading about spirituality. She is the purest form of Love in a human body. Just the mere sight of Amma is enough to make one feel loved by Her.
I had been praying for a guru to guide and teach me as I was serious about my spiritual growth. Books themselves can only take me so far. Amma first "called" me three years prior to meeting Her physically. Ever since I've been initiated by Amma two years ago, I have grown spiritually so fast. She is a remarkable guru, has so much love to give.
What's also amazing about Amma is that She is not bound physically to give Her devotees support and guidiance. She comes to me in my dreams all the time, and i also receive messages to reassure me that She is always with me. Since Amma is on Her last week on Her USA tour (She's in Boston right now and will be in Toronto this week before heading back to India.), you can go ahead and call and talk to Amma. She'll hear you and respond. Whether She is your guru or not, that is for you to find out, but She can help you find what you need in your life. I've had so many prayers answered by Her right away.
There's two sites on Her that you can learn more:
http://www.amritapuri.org (official India website)
http://www.amma.org (USA site, click on North America Tours for details)
I have a Flickr album of Amma http://www.flickr.com/photos/stacylovesamma When looking at photos of Her, pay attention to what you feel. What you feel is your answer.
Feel free to email me for any further questions.
Jai Amma!

The real guru resides in you..and when He wakes up.. whole universe will become yr guru
EDIT1: Make yrself strong that a guru comes to you.. ..not u searching for fake gurus..
Good gurus are there... but 90% are fakes.. so first develop some spiritual energies so that you can distinguish between truth and fake.
I dont say guru is not important.. but waiting for one to start spiritual journey is not adviseable
Krishna is the only guru... call him and he wil speak through every brick of yr house
