I'm in an advanced choir next year, and we have to pick out and but our own outfits. The girls have sort of decided on a dress (it's not official because only 7 girls were at our first dress meeting), but there are some arguments over it. It doesn't have sleeves and we'd have to wear the matching shrug with it should we choose the dress (our committee leader said something about Mormon girls not wearing sleeveless dresses). The problem is that most of us who were at the meeting don't want to wear a long-sleeved shrug because it gets really hot on stage, and it wouldn't be too ideal for traveling (we do a lot of traveling opn buses and stuff around the community). The dress we've sort of picked out is the Arietta Dress and the crepe shrug at Southeastern Performance Apparel. If anyone could find a few other appropriate dresses, it would be really helpful; the dress has to be full-length, preferrably a little bit of sleeve over the shoulder, and we've decided on black.

Oh, and if anyone could find a different shrug or something to go with the Arietta Dress, that would be fantastic (as long as the shrug is short sleeved, and nothing to the middle of the upper part of the arm). Thanks in advance. :)

Sorry, justme&3, I don't think those will work. Remember, we're dealing with a bunch of teen girls (including me; I suppose I should've said so earlier) who are kinda picky. I know them all rather well, and they wouldn't go for any of them. Thanks anyway. :)

Hi, faeriefiddler. We already know all the stuff you told me. Most of have been in choir for at least a few years already, so we know that we have to be able to breathe in the dress and that it has to be comfortable. It's just that we need something that would look presentable on every girl in the choir. The sites I've looked at don't have much of what we're looking for (something that isn't old lady-like and something that isn't too short or flashy revealing).

Pippenintheshire, is there any way you could ask your director where your dresses are from?

Most of us (including me) can't afford anything over $100.

Whatever you decide to get, make sure that it doesn't distract from your performance. You're on stage to sing, not model. What you wear should look nice and professional, but it's not as important as your singing. See if your teacher can find a catalog of uniforms and dresses and see if there's anything in there that you like.

Also make sure it's not too tight around the tummy. You don't want it to hinder your breath.

Good luck!

I am the uniform chair for our band and the catalogue we use has dress for choir. It's called the Juliette, and has five different sleeve options (long, short, 3/4, flutter and Cape), plus sleeveless.

As far as the shrug, ask the LDS girls if they would accept sleeveless dress, with a somewhat transparent shrug. They might do that, and it would look very elegant, IMHO.

email me if you want the information on the dress.

This lady does my choir dresses.
Don't be distracted by the "older lady" model on the webpage.
She is FAST and reasonable. Will make short sleeves and floor length. 5 styles to choose from. Usually have your dress in about 4 days. Custom made to fit you.

I don't know where we got our dresses from, but they have thick straps about 2-3 in. They are black and floor length. I am in our top choir and we travel everywhere too. They are very good for travel.

I've sung in choirs (amateur and professional) for years now, and the women who wear a simple black skirt (ankle length) with light white blouse always seem the most comfortable.
