On the one hand, we see the worst mass-murder in world history SINCE Pol Pot slaughtering tens of thousands of innocent Iraqis, and **wasting** the lives of thousands of our own soldiers. For NOTHING.
On the other hand, we have Bush's continual string of vetoes of bills that would expand valuable embryonic stem cell research that could hugely benefit millions of people.
Is this paradoxical -- or is it weirdly logical...?

By "Linda R" -- If you study the speeches of fascists like Hitler you will find an amazing and disgusting similarity to the Bush Nazi.
The philosophy of George Orwell's Animal Farm began with "All animals are created equal." It evolved into "All animals are created equal but some are more equal than others."

So it is with the neocons and the religious right or wrong. They scream respect life. But now some lives are more equal than others. Tens of thousands are slaughtered in the name of the war on terror. Millions die in Africa while we refuse to do anything unless we are invited in. Medical care in the United States is for the lucky. Some of us are uninsurable and discarded.
Work now to change things in the next election

To "VLT-505" -- "Killing babies?" You are one very CONFUSED person. Bables exist only from BIRTH on, and embryonic stem cell research holds WONDROUS promise for helping millions of real PEOPLE. (But thanks for the chuckle!!)
RPE* : People :: acorn : oak tree
*RPE = Reproductive-Process Entity.
To "britanykoren86" -- Nope. Sensible, realistic, and fair-minded egalitarion, and defender of human and civil rights. BIG difference from *your* misperception.
To "shaolt2002" -- Debates depend on FACTS. Egalitarians have an ABUNDANCE of those in our debating arsenal. What FACT can you present to defend denying vital research that could help millions?
To "kenny p" -- Embyonic stem cell research is 100% **harmless**. (Are you related to "VLT-505?")
To "rukidding" -- There's a *synonym" for social liberals: Egalitarians.
To "Sam" -- Bravo!!

To "Mariah B" -- Another "Bravo!!" GW Bush is the worst mass-murderer the world has experienced since Pol Pot, and MOST of the world's people are fully aware of that. WE are where the German people were in 1936, in many unsettling ways, thanks to him. So far, only our strong Constitution is saving us.
To "Richard B" -- Abortion-on-**request** IS a legal non-issue, and has been since 1973, thankfully! Roe vs. Wade was the Emancipation Proclamation for girls and women. And over any given recent 18-year-long period, worldwide, a BILLION girls and women have their full range of future opportunites **restored** to them, via the hugely-beneficial REMEDY of harmless abortion, for all who **choose** it.
As for embryonic stem cells -- there should be NO restrictions, and their FULL medical potential should be briskly pursued.

(Did you think by changing your nick you could dissassociate yourself for being called out on your ignorance, "Noam?")

ALL types of stem cells should be researched, including embryonic ones. Countless thousands of embryos are routinely discarded anyway, which is a total WASTE of a highly-valuable resource. Bush's idiotic opposition utilizing them is just another reason to CONDEMN him as the most worthless president ever to mis-occupy the White House.

Okay here goes...Embryonic stem cells are the same thing as stem cells taken from cord blood, or even stem cells in your body. A stem cell is simply a cell that has not gone through differentiation yet. That just means that it is not sure what type of cell that it will be when it matures. Like the cell does not know if it will be a blood cell or a liver cell, etc. So, what is the difference in getting stem cells from an embryo that you have to kill or getting them from cord blood? Cord blood is drawn from every baby born in the USA to test for disease, why not fight to have what blood is left over after testing to be sent to research labs and not kill those embryos. GWB, and all of his faults, is NOT against stem cell research but is against EMBRYONIC stem cell research.

when you look at stem cell research, you will find that;
1: stem cells are not a magic bullet cure all
2: embryonic stem cells have shown little promise
3: adult stem cells have shown promise
4: Bush was the only president to fund stem cell research, but he did limit it to lines already open. your golden boy Clinton never authorized stem cell research, and he had plenty of chances to
embryonic stem cell research is merely a veiled effort to make abortion on demand a legal non-issue. there are many sources for stem cells other than aborted fetus's including cord blood, and yet liberals refuse to mention that.
as for Bush slaughtering tens of thousands of Iraqi civilians, you are still blinded by gore's defeat in 2000 aren't you? the insurgents are the ones killing Iraqi civilians by the bushel NOT US soldiers, and certainly not bush. and if you had even bothered to check the records, you would find that democrats were complaining about Saddam long before bush got into office. Clinton even signed the Iraqi freedom act requiring the US government to work for regime change in Iraq, and yet the then coward in chief was too busy getting blown by Monica, and lying about it under oath, to bother to do anything even though Saddam had committed many acts of war, and consistently thumbed his nose at the world regarding the cease fire agreement(NOT A PEACE TREATY) that he signed. thus technically a state of war still existed between the coalition and Iraq. and if you don't think coalition aircraft being fired upon when patrolling the UN sanctioned no fly zones, then next time you get into an aircraft that is being fired upon and see what you reaction would be.

we really really need a better foreign policy. the quicker, the better. and the stem cell thing, it has to do with Bush's moral views. and yes, it is paradoxical. People against stem cell research, what is your rationale?
EDIT: I read some of the above answers. Most of you said that we will be killing unborn babies for stem cell research. How very ignorant of you! Stem cells can ALSO be obtained from the placenta of a woman after she gives birth. Additionally, when abortion occurs--and the fetus is aborted anyway, you could just take stem cells from there.

This is a point I have been trying to get across to people FOREVER! Well done.
For all you pro lifers reading this I have this question to add.....
How an you be pro life and support George Bush, Dick Cheney and there war for oil? If you are going to proclaim to be pro life that should include the life of a soldier, the life of the Iraqi citizens, and the lives of the underprivileged here at home, not just the life of an embryo. If you truly are pro life you would not support these war mongrels and you would support life SAVING research such as stem cell research. Being pro life is fine but if that is what you are be pro ALL life, not this hypocritical version.

It is neither. Killing someone who is a threat to your safety, although not a Christian belief, is still better than killing innocent unborn babies.
How is this paradoxical? You are so full of your hate you can't see the plain truth.

... People like you are virtually impossible to debate. You do not really even stand for anything you are just a hateful person who wants to confine those who disagree. I like difference of opinion and compromise. But you want it all your way apparently. There is no way to deal with people like you.
