Work experience is generally more important in the trades such as electrician, carpentry, mechanics, and plumbing while a college degree is more important in the professions such as accounting, engineering, teaching, law and medicine.

Since you are asking in the Fishing Forum, work experience is more important in guiding or commercial fishing and a college degree is more important for getting a job as a government fisheries biologist.

There's a lot to say about both answers here. If you wanted a doctor you would want one that was trained well and had a good education. Would you let a dentist work on your teeth just because he pulled a tooth or, was well trained in the use of all his tools?
A carpenter can get work experience and work with wood, an electrician can get experience working on the job but, a brain surgeon cannot work without getting all the necessary tools from his books and what he learns in school so, there's two school of thought here and they can't be compared, they're apples to oranges. Both fruit but of different qualities.

There are NO legitimate College Degrees based on life experience or work experience. Even in the Military -- we attend training in person -- and that training does have college credit assigned to it. But this is also an academic setting as well.

If you 're talking about a career in the fishing industry it is important for both. A degree in either marketing or biology would go a long way but you need to jump in now and start fishing local tournaments to gain fishing experience and exposure. There isn't a book that can teach you what hours on the water can. Good luck.

In this day and age the degree is important only for the paper!
I would rather hire a person with work experience than a degree because a degree is just that an award of passing a course only!It has not true life bearing of education, skill or ability!

Take 2 ppl one in school and one in the work force for the same job(excluding medical or any health fields) give each 4 years I would bet that the person doing the job for 4 years would come out being the better person to qualify for the postion give all equal!

both are important in finding a good occupation................
i say this but i dont have a college degree..............wish i did
i may not be where i am now.

i do construction work for a living.the money good though, anywhere from $23-$30 an hour.

but the downside to this is i work and i work hard, get nasty, dirty.and filthy.

maybe with the degree i would not have to get so dirty.

my reccomendation is go to college and get a degree even if it is an associates,it is better than nothing

A degree because they are more competitive now and most of the students are capable of being very successful in that field, they just need to be given a chance. Most professors at competitive schools are top-notch in that field, and the students are taught right under them. With work experience, the chances are much less that that person has been working under someone better in that field, but it is possible.

now a day, both are indespensible!

but i think that work experience is more important...i worked for a temp agency and they wouldn't even look at a resume if they didnt have office experience. it's sad that ppl spend thousands of dollars to get a piece of paper that says they are qualified to do the job, but if you have never really done it then you won't get a job...

Let me put it this way...

Without a college degree you start at the bottom and take 10 years to get to $35,000 a year.

With a college degree you start at $35,000 a year and keep going up.

You choose.
