It depends. I think it is worth the risk. Put some of them away they might shape up. You can let the officer know if you think there will be trouble and they will deal with it accordingly. What is the point of having a justice system if people are afraid to use it?

You may do whatever you like. Reporting the crime and making a charge is the best way to get the bike back. It could lead to trouble however, especially if the bike is not found and the case cannot be proven. On the other hand, letting it go is like telling those same neighbors that you are an easy target. If the do somehow retaliate, it would also be a probable crime.

You should go up to them and confront them, If you cannot do that, you have to move. But if it was I that this happen. I will make sure that the neighbors were the ones who stole the bike. And if they were the ones, when they are not home, go in there and break the windows, put sugar in the gas tank, or bring it up to the whole neighborhood and revolt.

Well, you either take a stand and put an end to the madness or let it go and continue to be a victim.
Incidentally, in many states, by them entering your property and then your front porch, that would be considered a felony Burglary and in stealing the bike it would be at least a petite theft.
At minimum its a Trespass and a theft.
I say call the police..... but, its your neighborhood... you have to live there, not I.

Never call the cops. In my experience they only cause more problems, not solve the problems you ask them to. You should get revenge on them yourself. They stole your sons bike so you should steal their car or something like that. You could also plant drugs in their house. In that situation it is ok to call the cops. If you plant enough, they wont be free for a long time so there will be no retaliation.

I would go over to their house and just say, my sons bike has been taken, have you seen anything going on at my house? And if they say No, then I would say okay, thanks. If he starts yelling and saying are you accusing me of taking the bike, I didn't steal the blankety blankety bike! , then I would call the law. Not only did they steal then, but they threatened also. You might just have to buy another bike, but then they will take it again because they know you are scared. If you are really worried that your family could be in danger, move!

I say you go and talk to the guy. Act like you don't know where your sons bike went. Ask him if he has seen it around or seen anyone take it. And then if he says No, say thanks anyways I'll just have to report it. It'll give him a little scare maybe he will return it. if he doesn't report him and tell the cops hes trouble. They'll help you out.
Good Luck.

You're in a tough situation. If you report them, you might get the bike back (emphasis on the "might"), and the thief might get punished. But then that might result in worse happening to you. If you don't, you'll have to buy a new bike, which you may have to do anyway. And then they may be emboldened by your inaction and do something else to you.
My answer is to get a guard dog and/or a security system and report them.
