I saw a really nice looking gs500f at a dealership near me. The dealership says it's a 2006 model and it only has 300km on it so inclined to beleive them. The problem is, the coloring/ fairings are that of the 2004 model. So I want to check and see if the previous owner just switched out the fairings (sudgesting possible damage), if it just got a paint job, or if it's actually a 2004.

Thanks in advance :)

edit: Or if someone could tell me what number in the VIN represents the year it was made in I could look for myself :)

Well, all motorcycles I've seen have a stamped label on the frame near the speedo that states exactly when it was manufactured along with some other details. It's possible the fairings were switched, but that really doesn't affect the value much if they are undamaged and fit properly.

Year is disclosed in position 10 of a VIN. If that digit is a 6, it is an 06, if a 5, an 05, and if a 4, an 04. It would read like XXXXXXXXX6XXXXXXX, etc. This is true for all US vehicles. The last several model years are:

2008: 8
2007: 7
2006: 6
2005: 5
2004: 4
2003: 3
2002: 2
2001: 1
2000: Y

All VIN positions are as follows:

Position 1-3 World Manufacturer Identifier
Position 4 Restraint System Type
Brake Type and GVWR Class (Trucks and Vans Only)
Position 5-7 Line, Series, Body Type
Position 8 Engine Type
Position 9 Check Digit
Position 10 Model Year
Position 11 Assembly Plant
Position 12-17 Production Sequence Number

The eighth diget from the right denotes the model year. So if it's a 2006 the 8th from the right, 10th from the left, will be a 6. The VIN, vehicle identification number, is located at the neck of the frame on the right side on a plate. The # will also be stamped on the left side.

If I have been you i might initiate out on a 250. that's what I did and that i'm so grateful i did. The 250 is a great starter motorcycle it has skill yet to not a lot the place you cant administration the motorcycle. Its great for getting to understand on highways and back roads. I had a 250 for some 3 hundred and sixty 5 days and then i upgraded to a six hundred once I felt i became waiting for greater skill. The motorcycle will possibly not have as speedy of a %. up through fact the 5 hundred you % yet its additionally unlikely to deliver you flying once you hit the throttle. maximum of my pals now are turning out to be motorcycles and that they began on six hundred's and that they are nonetheless afraid to take them on the line through fact they cant save administration on back roads! So yeah initiate out with a 250 and then while your waiting and sense you are able to handle some greater skill sell your 250 and purchase the 5 hundred. have confidence me its nicely worth it.
