He was in hell conquering the power of death, and undergoing every single suffering and experience of mankind, and reversing its power.

He went and taught the spirits in prison. He opened up missionary work for those that died without the Gospel.
1 Peter 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

The bible says he descended into the lower parts of the earth. Went to hell and took the keys from Satan and then resurrected all those in paradise to bring to heaven with him. Eph. 4:9 Acts 2:27 Rev 1:18 Luke 23:43

Well, Christ didnt go to heaven because on the third day when he appeared to Mary, She reached out to touch him and he said " touch me not, for I have not yes ascended to my father..."(John 20:17) That means he was somewhere other then Heaven.
Also, When Christ was on the Cross the thief told Christ to remember him when he goes into his kingdom. then Christ said, "today shalt thou be in paradise with me."(Luke 23:43).
Paradice is somewhere else other then Hell.
18. For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to god, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the spirit:
19. By which he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;
Also in 1st Peter 4:6
6.For for this cause was the gospel preached also unto them that are dead, that they may be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to god in the spirit.
Christ was in a Spirit world where he taught thoes that were in prison for the time he was gone.

I believe that He went and taught the people that were in spirit prison, those who had never had the opportunity to hear and accept the plan, and everyone who had died before the atonement. Then, He took the prophets of old- Abraham, Isaac, Noah, Adam, all the rest before Him- to paradise (kinda like a holding point for those who know Christ and believe in Him).
He did take the keys of hell away from Satan, but He didn't have to go to hell to do it. Because of the power of the priesthood, which He holds ALL the keys to, he was able to take the keys without even going to Satan.
As far as Him saying "My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?": That means that right before He died, God couldn't bear to be there. It was too painful for Him to watch and witness, so he separated Himself from Christ. Also, I think that there had to be some separation so Christ understood what it feels like to not have that presence with Him.
As far as the thief on the cross, He never told him that he was forgiven of all his sins. He told him that they would be in paradise together, that day. I take this to mean that the thief knew who Christ was, and was willing to accept Him as the savior. But, he still had to repent of his sins. That could have happened after his death, and after learning the full gospel while there with Christ.

Actually he was dead about 39 hours; even though by Gen. 1 definitions, it was 3 nights and 3 days, (assuming 6:00 AM sunrise, 6:00 PM sunset).
What Jesus did duringthe time period? ???

That cannot be answered. Those who wrote about it didn't know either. In their efforts to make him a god, they wrote down all the stuff that people before them had written and had said about their gods. Being buried for three days was one of the requirements.

Actually it was a day and a half (Friday eve till Sunday morning).
I personally doubt the resurrection, so I think he was just plain dead and stayed that way.
