My boss is having a BBQ for our entire staff and their families at his home. He does not want us to bring any food, as his wife has it "under control". He has his own wine cellar, so wine won't do. Any suggestions on something to bring so we don't show up emtpy handed?

I wouldn't vote out wine just because he has a wine cellar. It may seem that he has more than enough wine, but it is obviously something that he is passionate about and likes to collect. If you do buy wine, I would definitely ask a wine consultant to help you pick it out. Sometimes you can find wines that are rare and good, but are lesser known and less expensive.

But if there are kids there you might want to bring something that is entertaining for the kids, so that the adults can talk. It sounds simple, but kids love to play with bubbles. Hand held sparklers would also be fun for a BBQ.

If he has a cellar, then I think bringing wine would be very appropriate. He won't have to serve it, but instead add it to his collection for another time. Because he is a collector, try to find a wine/region that would impress him. Something cheap will just embarrass you.

Perhaps a funny BBQ apron, or chef's hat, since he will be cooking, I assume....

Possibly, some BBQ utensils. Spatula, etc. They have some in kits that are pretty cool.

Maybe a grill light, that attaches to the cover, so he can cook if it gets dark.

Home made ice cream, if you have a maker, is always a big hit.

Good luck, and have fun, but don't get too drunk, and hit on anybody there.
Stevo.

I would still bring a nice bottle of wine. If they have a wine cellar they could add it to their collection.

Bring a bottle of wine anyway. If he has a cellar he will appreciate something good. It is always polite to bring a bottle of wine unless they are recovering alcoholics or something.

Flowers for the hostess. Don't bring food or wine if they have already told you not to bring it.
