Ok, Obviously no one here knows what I am talking about.
When you go thru the 12 steps..AA etc...
They often refer to a "higher Power" how ever you define it.
Since Athiests do not believe in one I am asking how you managed to do the 12 steps while leaving that one part out...

Ever hear the story of the alcoholic who couldn't and wouldn't believe in "God." When he was told that he would never achieve staying sober without one, he thought for a minute then exclaimed he would make a "doorknob" his higher power. When asked why a doorknob, he stated, "Without it, he would not have the opportunity to attend an AA meeting............"

Step 1: Drink
Step 2: Drink some more
Step 3: Time for a refill
Step 4: Open a new bottle
Step 5: Repeat steps 1 - 4
I think the higher power is Jack Daniels or Jim Beam

12 steps? What is this, AA?
I don't need 12 steps to define a higher power. Higher power for me: Some intelligent being that somehow controls the entire universe and decided to make life just for the hell of it...

I'm not sure I follow you, are you talking about the 12 step program for alcoholics anonymous, or a 12 step program to Deni the existence of god. For a true Atheists there are no 12 steps they simply do not believe in God.

Hey, watch Penn & Teller's Bull$hit sometime about 12 step programs & you form your opinion on it. It was a series on Comedy Central for a while- you can get it/rent it on DVD. 12 steps are so based around "you're a piece of garbage- you can't do it yourself- you MUST ask for god's help to defeat your addictions." its ridiculous. I would advise against the traditional 12 step program if your are atheist. There are alternatives out there due to this! Good luck! I hope you succeed!!

Higher Power doesn't necessarily mean god. A higher power could be anything you believe in, that is bigger than you. You can look at it from the science aspect of things... The Laws of Attraction maybe. That is a higher power, however, not in a biblical sense.

Athiests don't believe in a higher power? Did the universe start as a big bang? Surely that's a higher power than anything physical we experience on earth. Is not the sun itself a higher power than one tiny little athiest? Believe in evolution? Can you cause evolution? Didn't think so, therefore it is a higher power. You may not believe in God (which is your perogitive like it is my perogative to believe the opposite) but surely it is nonsensical to say there is absolutely no higher power.

There are no "athiests" An "athiest" would be the superlative form of the adjective "athy" which does not exist. Please take the time to look up the word.
As to "higher power" and the 12 steps, many people regard the collective wisdom and experience of those who have been sober longer as a higher power.

Blink, the light goes on! Thanks for the explanation. I have never been through a 12 step program like AA but I imagine you woul just have to leave out that step. If you don't believe in a higher power, then there is nothing to define.
