NewCatholic: exactly...I'm not. I trust my own judgement and follow my own morality, based on empathy and the pre-Christian Golden Rule.

The threat of everlasting hell has proven to be a powerful way to convince people to accept the most ridiculous ideas.

No, you are not correct. Christianity basically says, God wants you to come back to him, and the way back is merely to say I accept Jesus as my savior. The Christians believe the bible is a book of many things, but can't be proven wrong. And the prophecies that spoke of Jesus (there are over three hundred) all came true. The gaming odds of a trisect of three hundred races, where you choose three hundred different horses, in three hundred races all coming in first in their race is, in scientific and statistical terms, 10 x 10^600. That is a number so large, it can not be pro oven wrong.

So only an innocent but ignorant person would bet against the rest of the bible being wrong. Now I have not seen God, and I have met some people who have died, then revived, and returned with basically the same message: Repent and love each other. That is not hard either.

So you can deny God, and deny Jesus, until you actually read the book. But I want you to remember the Christians here have been trying to tell you so. And when the future events unfold as we think they might, please feel free at that moment to get off your high horse, and ask God for help, and in that final second as you are so scared of dying, go ahead and accept Jesus.

Christianity does not ask you to believe anything outrageous, but simply that God exists and is loving, merciful and forgiving. If you can believe these joyful facts then you should have no problem with Christianity. For if God exists and is loving, it makes sense that He would send His Son to earth. And since Christ was the Son of God all of His miracles and His ressurection were accomplished by the power of God, which transcends the natural world. And since we all have sinned and do not deserve to be with God, the sacrifice of Christ on the cross was not only necessary but should fill us with a sense of gratitude. The message of Christ is a message of hope, the promise of our salvation from what would otherwise be a life of separation from God. This is what hell is, separation from God, but through Christ we can avoid this fate that we all deserve because of our sins. Be grateful, not cynical!

Its saying:

The spiritual situation is that men are sinners and are a fallen race (though most don't know).

Jesus has come so that you can be born-again (spirit recreated), get forgiven and have God with you (eternal life here). Because of Jesus' sacrifice you can be declared spotless by God, no matter how bad you have been. Christians can then grow in their faith, and into a life of love. Righteousness of behaviour isn't commanded as a prerequisite of a place in heaven for believers since atonement has been provided, but one works at it with God.

-------------

If the bad diagnosis of man's spiritual condition is true it is good news.
If its untrue, what do you care about its claims ? There are religions which have a more gratifying understanding of man's natural position with respect to his Creator (not that I believe them, but they may be more pleasing for us.)

Pretty much. Sure, there's some other decent stuff thrown in about loving everyone and not being judgemental and all that but I haven't seen much of that from Christianity in the 20-some years that I was a Christian.

I'm now agnostic. I have seen MUCH more love and kindness and acceptance from non-Christians than Christians themselves.

Lies to you

Truth to me... John 14:6 Jesus Said " I am the way the Truth and the life, no one comes to the father except through me."

Romans 10:9 "Confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord, Believe in your heart the God raised Jesus from the dead, and you will be saved..."

Not outrageous simple...

it's a lot simpler if you recognize where you are and which way is home. Christ came to find the lost and lead them home. Prodigal sons of prodigal bitches just haven;t had enough yet to wanna go home and make life Hell for the rest of us. Don't blame the teacher for the student's ignorance or misinterpretation.

Right-wing Christianity, yes ... but there are other forms of Christianity. The Gospel of Thomas opened my eyes to a new way of thinking about Christianity.

Don't make a statement that you know nothing about. And just because you don't believe doesn't make it a lie. I can say your big bang is a lie, but that is your right to believe it or not, One day you will find out the truth and by then it will be too late
