Sorry about your town. Mine is doing very nicely. If you count University City as "my town," there are parks everywhere, and it is green and pleasant. But University City is really a part of St. Louis. And that is also very green, with parks and walks and trees and flowers everywhere, except in the oldest part of downtown, where there are some factory sections just like in any large city. And even some of those are being renovated into luxury loft apartments.

Every city needs to have its own responses to the loss of green spaces. For many, it will be creating public parks. For some, it will be private industrial parks, gardens and the like. Much depends on the economics and the ecology, and cannot be generalized to every city. As to how you can make the public aware, write letters to the editor of the newspaper for starters, and mention it in the groups you belong to. Talk up the idea of trees and plants as putting out oxygen and absorbing carbon dioxide. It is healthier to live with a balance of plants and animals, soil and concrete.
