I want to take Metro North then drive on to Ithaca, NY. Which Metro North stations will allow me to do this without having to take a taxi from the station to the car rental place? My main reason for taking Metro North is to save some money on the car rental. If you have a better suggestion for a cheap car rental, let me know.

To Mr. thddscp and anyone who thinks like him, renting a car in NYC costs about $100 per day. If I take the Mount Visco advice, the cost is $20 per day. The metro north fare is about $20, now how is it that I'm costing myself more money?

If your final destination is Cornell, they have an express bus.

CoachUSA/Shortline and Greyhound also go to Ithaca and are cheaper than the Cornell bus.

Ithaca has a public bus system for local travel (TCAT).

If you still need to rent a car in Ithaca, the bus station is at the corner of West State St. and North Fulton St., which seems to be a walkable distance from National Car Rental.
National Car Rental
435 West State Street, Ithaca, NY 14850

Mount Kisco Metro North station has an Enterprise rental car company about 3/4 of a mile away. It would be a brief walk or they may have a courtesy shuttle since they advertise being able to pick you up. There are also taxis at the station if you needed one. I have rented cars from there to take long trips on and it isn't too expensive. (I have had someone drop me off and I have walked it, depending on the weather).

Your best bet is to take the Hudson line to Poughkeepsie and rent a car up there. Sensible Car Rental is the closest to the Poughkeepsie train station. Their phone number is (845) 473-9443. Fares from Grand Central to Poughkeepsie are One way peak - $17. One way off-peak- $12.75. Round trip peak - $34. Round trip off peak - $25.50. These are the prices if you buy the ticket at Grand Central, at the booth or at the ticket machines. There can be a $5 surcharge above the normal ticket price if the ticket is purchased on the train. Trust me, my boyfriend is a conductor on Metro North.

There is a Hertz in Jersey City near Exchange place PATH station. There is a Hertz at Stamford MetroNorth station -- slightly out of your way. Also one at North White PLains Station.

Just rent the car and drive the whole way. You won't save any money by riding Metro North first, and all you will do is add even more time and distance to the trip.
I remember your previous post asking about taking the MNRR to Poughkeepsie then renting a car. If your final destination is Ithaca, that is probably the worst way to go about it-- You will add a good 2-3 hours to the trip.
Ithaca is west of the Hudson River. Rent a car, cross over to the other side of the Hudson (Remember that going west on the George Washington Bridge is toll-free) so you can take a more direct route to Ithaca. Staying east of the Hudson all the way to Poughkeepsie will add another 50 miles to your trip.
As a matter of fact, that detour will probably cost you even more money in the form of the train ticket, gasoline, and time wasted.
Whoever gave the low rating: It's your time and money that you are wasting, not mine.
