If you're slipping on any dangerous slopes covered in hardened snow, you should carry an ice ax and consider wearing crampons, but if by "difficult" you mean you're sinking in the snow, then you want to wear snowshoes?

Adjustable poles do cost that much, though they're sometimes on sale. Here's a pair of adjustable trekking poles for $34.97 http://www.sierratradingpost.com/p/,98776_Komperdell-Denali-Trekking-Poles-Paired-PE-Grip.html But you can probably buy used ski poles for less than $10 at Play It Again Sports or garage sales.

My poles for snowshoeing and cross country skiing are old school bamboo. They are light and strong, and have an aggressive point on them. I bought them at Salvation Army for $5!!

Go out into the woods and find some straight sticks. They would be free. Carve or whittle them down, sand them down, etc and you have your own home made hiking sticks.
