The glycerin suppository it's self isn't the problem - it's sticking "something" in your rectum that is the problem. Personally I don't like them [any] and not only is it indicative of an eating disorder but also mental disorders when used in excess. As this person gets older, the problems will get worse. This person needs help and I don't mean another suppository !!!

I don't know about it being an addiction but if your relative is using a suppository after ever meal she eats, there is high probability that she has an eating disorder. Many bulimic use some form of laxative to empty put there systems. Same with anorexics. If this is the case, your relative definitely needs to get some help. Regular use of laxatives does change your bowel function over time. You get used to using them and without them the person is unable to move their bowels. They can develop chronic constipation.

Glycerine suppositories aren't addictive in the way that stimulant laxatives are - your body doesn't become physically dependent on them. But no one should rely on them entirely - if this relative has a fiber-rich diet she should be able to wean herself off them. Which won't be easy if she's "psychologically" addicted to them, but...she should try.

When you use a laxative/suppository youre body become accustom to it and if you continue to use them, it will be hard for you to have a bowel movement without one, pick up any one of these in the pharmacy, i think in the back of it where it says warning, it states this info.

It really depends on the relative. If she eats a lot of fat, protein, or carbohydrates and not enough fiber, it is quite possible that she cannot have a BM without them. Glycerine is a natural and mild stimulant laxative and should not hurt her. It is better to use too much suppositories then to strain to force out a BM that could potentially lead to stroke.

I've never heard of this before, but I guess anything's possible. I'd ask her about her diet - is she eating any fruit, grains, etc? I'm not a doctor or a medical expert by any means, but my guess is that she's convinced herself that she needs these.
