My father died reciently, and my mother has terminal cancer. I also just got engaged.... I feel so guilty for wanting to be happy about it. It's as if I don't deserve to even smile because of all the pain around me. How do I support my mom and still take care of me? PLEASE HELP.

I work in a hospital as a dialysis tech. I've dialyzed many terminaly ill people (cancer, liver failure esp). This is what I have learned: those terminaly ill are *usually* accepting of their situation. They are in pain and accept their fate. They find peace in passing away. Family members have a hard time (and cargivers). Others are right: your parents want you to be happy. Take advantage of this situation and ask your mom everything you've always wanted to ask her, resolve any conflicts. this is not a time to hold grudges. be at peace with her and yourself. Really enjoy your mom as much as possible and everything will be fine!

There is nothing wrong about feeling happy because you just got engaged. (congrads) Feeling guilty about in your circumstances is also not unusual. Most would feel guilty. You have a right to feel happy about getting married. My advice, be happy. Share it with your mom. She loves you and seeing you happy probably makes her feel happy too. And when your time is limited, squeezing every last ounces of happiness out of life should be a priority. So be there for your mom when she needs you and maybe help "distract" her by getting her to help you plan your wedding.

you do deserve to be happy !!

im sure your mother would not want you to sulk around all day after one of the best moments in your life .. you be unhappy isnt gonna make her any better .. she is probably so happy for you and the one thing you can do to make her life a little brighter is to not bring her down by being sad all the time

i am so sorry about your father and mother .. but congratulations on your engagement

Three things.

1. It is natural to feel this way. You are not alone.

2. Your mom and dad want you to be happy! Don't let them down on this.

3. Discuss this with your doctor and get some grief therapy. It will make a world of difference.

Good luck!
