I just upgraded my system (while shutting down) for Windows XP, it had two system upgrades apparently. And when I went to check on it to see if it was shut down correctly, it had a black screen asking me to try starting Windows in Safe Mode:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode for Networking
Safe Mode with Prompt

Look for last known good configuration

Start Windows Normally

All of those options would reboot my system and bring me back to that black startup screen. I tried going into BIOS and reset defaults, but that didn't help. I don't think this is a virus, (because the problems coincided with upgrade) but on the off chance it is, can anyone help me with this issue?

There is an option while shutting down windows, that if there are upgrades required through MS, that will allow you to upgrade at system shutdown.

So, I used Ctrl,Alt, Delete, Shutdown with Install option. You know what I mean now?

If you are upgrading your system, a duplicate entry might be added to the boot.ini file giving you two OS options that are the same OS. If you aren't concerned about the files on your hard drive, I'd suggest booting to the Windows XP CD and formatting your C partition.

If you are getting a black screen on boot up, it sounds like something got screwed up on the upgrade.

First, I would recommend doing a clean install. Upgrades always have the potential to cause problems. There is one thing you could try. Do you have the original disk? Try booting up from it. You should get a list of options. One is "repair." It will go into Dos mode. There you will be able to fix your boot record. I can't remember the command but type help and scroll through until you find it. It'll look something like this "fxboot.exe" There is also a master boot record, fixing that wouldn't hurt either. Bios won't help.

It sounds like you have a hard drive failure or an incomplete or fouled up Windows XP load.

You can boot from the XP disc but I suggest you boot from your original operating system and get the system operational. Once that is done, then do the XP upgrade. If you cannot boot from the original operating system and get the original system running, then you may have a bad hard drive and you need to replace it.

If you have run an upgrade it obviously has not loaded correctly and you will need to try again. You confuse me when you say you did it while shutting down, you can't upgrade while shutting down.

Sounds like a corrupt MBR or registry issue. If you can't even get to the windows logo, then try these steps from M$:
