Religion spells out how you are supposed to live and controls your life, so are atheists out of control?

Personally, out of control. ;)

I am an "atheist". No, I didn't ask yesterday why atheists are here. And if you would read my profile you would know that this is just a fun question. (thanks Stormilutionist Chasealogist)

I'm glad at least SOME of you got it.

I know more atheists and non-religion believers that act with more dignity, and treat people with better respect than I see most Christians that I've encountered do. According to most religions, man is not perfect and everyone is capable of sin. So the child molesters, the wife beaters, the drug users, the alcoholics, the gang bangers, the murders, the thieves, and the adulterers that follow or believe in a religion, you mean to tell me that religion controls them or that they are not out of control? (And please don't try to say these type of people are not involved in religions, you've heard of the priests molesting children, the racist clans member claiming to beat and kill non-whites as work of God. So don't pretend that all religious people are saints.) So who's more in control? Atheist and non-religious people at least do not use religion as a right to do wrong or hide behind it.

EDIT - And for the record, religion can never control a persons life, it's the person that controls their own lives.

Religion does not spell out how "you" are supposed to live, nor does it control your life.

Morals and ethical values develop within the culture to which people belong. Religion really just underscores that development.

You really ought to meet a few more atheists, so that you could have some idea of how mistaken you are.

Religion spells out nothing of the kind. It spells out how to be narrow minded, dictatorial as to how others should live and bigoted yet get away with it by playing the "god" trump card.

Religious people are out of control. The safe thing would be to lock them up - after all we lock up other people who do things because the non-existent voices they hear tell the to,

That is a good thing. Historically, control has always led to discrimination, intolerance, and lack of progression. Why would you want someone to tell you how to live your life anyways? Independence is what makes us human, along with our ability to think for ourselves. As long as we dont hurt other people, we should live our lifes the way WE see fit. That isnt out of control, thats taking control.

I'm not an atheist but I can answer your question. The Bible tells you how to live your life and atheists don't believe in God so they live according to their own ways and still break the Ten Commandments!

The fool has said in his heart,
“There is no God.”
They are corrupt,
They have done abominable works,
There is none who does good. Psalm 14:1

There is a way that seems right to a man,
But its end is the way of death. Prov. 14:12

For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their own craftiness. 1 Cor. 3:19

For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse. Rom. 1:20

Um, not particularly. Almost everyone has a conscience. We also have laws and "Locke's Social Contract." Atheists also understand "Be good" and "Do as you would be done by"; these aren't just religious concepts, but are also backed by Game Theory (math).

Religion isn't required for a civilized society. Thanks for asking. Have a nice day, and don't do anything that would embarass your parents.

Why yes, isn't that the general idea? But there are many kinds of control, even some that look like freedom. Best to regularly test one's assumptions to make sure one pair of shackles hasn't been exchanged for another.

Considering that Christians and Muslims are overrepresented in prison populations and atheists are underrepresented, I'd say it's the Christians that are out of control.

No ,They are the ones" in Control "of their lives .They don`t succumb to guilt and fear of an unknown place called hell .They certainly would not follow the teachings of an uneducated goat herder. They are more moral and less judgmental than religious people I know .

I am in control, relatively. I am certainly not in control by any religious standard, that's for sure. But then the loss of control over my life is what is weakening the religious infrastructure.
