My 2yr old son has had a knot on the side of his neck for over a year and a half. The Dr. thought it first to be a swollen lymphnode, two months ago he had tubes put in but the knot is still there.

His Dr. is now advising we have it removed. The negative part of this is he'll have to be put to sleep via a tube down his throat, he'll have scarring, it's a dangerous spot b/c it's close to arteries. The surgery would take a little over an hour then a biopsy would be done. The mass has not changed in size in the last year and its mobile (you can move it around)

Is it worth the risk for him to have this procedure? I feel like it's a catch 22, what would you do if you were me?

He had tubes put in b/c he was always having ear infections, since the tubes his ears have looked perfect. There is no way of them knowing what he mass is unless they remove it. I'm getting a second opionon from his pediatrician, and from another specialist. I was just wondering if anyone has a child whose gone through this.

If my doctor recommended it I would have it done. I know it is scary to have your child go under anesthesia. My daughter had to have a couple of procedures done when she was 4 and she was put under. It was scary but everything turned out all right. Talk to your doctor. Then make a list of the benefits versus the risks of having the procedure. That will help you decide if it is worth the risk.

If you are at all unsure about this I suggest you get a second opinion from another doctor. All surgical procedures have risks. I trust our family doctor, but I would still get a second opinion if I felt uncomfortable about something she suggested or diagnosed. Your son's doctor should not be offended if you ask for a referral for a second opinion, perhaps he/she can recommend a specialist, maybe an Ear, Nose, Throat doctor. If your son's doctor is bothered by the fact you want a second opinion, I would change doctors. Be honest with your son's doctor, let him/her know you have questions and doubts about the procedure. Make an appointment to talk to the doctor without your son there so you can ask questions without distractions. Take notes since it always seems to make a lot of sense at the time the doctor says it, but later you can't always remember the things you heard.

my son had almost the same thing it started at the age of 2yrs and he is going on 6 now but his didn't move so the doctors left it alone but they still keep an eye on it, it is very small but anytime he gets sick it swells up to the size of a golf ball but on the down side my father had the same thing when he was in his 20's he had to get it removed and he is just fine now so if i was you yes it would get it removed and i wish you and your family the best

I'd definately get a second opinion and seek advice from a specialist or a surgeon, directly.

If he MUST go under, try not to have him go under general, but under another SAFER type called, "twilight". It's more of a deep seditive and it doesn't require machines to breathe for the patient.

Best of luck to you and your son!

i have a lump in my neck it sounds just like your sons, im still having test done, but in my case i would get surgury..espiclly so they could to a biopsy on it..as a mother as much i wouldnt want to see my little boy in pain i would do that if the doctors could not get a biopsy any other way.

I'd trust the doctor. No procedure is risk free, but this sounds pretty routine, and the scarring will probably be hardly nocticeable.

Yes it is worth the risk. What if it is cancer? However, I would have 2 other doctors opinions before you take him into surgery.
