My 2yr old son has had a knot on the side of his neck for over a year and a half. The Dr. thought it first to be a swollen lymphnode, two months ago he had tubes put in but the knot is still there.

His Dr. is now advising we have it removed. The negative part of this is he'll have to be put to sleep via a tube down his throat, he'll have scarring, it's a dangerous spot b/c it's close to arteries. The surgery would take a little over an hour then a biopsy would be done. The mass has not changed in size in the last year and its mobile (you can move it around)

Is it worth the risk for him to have this procedure? I feel like it's a catch 22, what would you do if you were me?

I am getting a second opinion from his pediatrician, the Dr. who is recommending surgery his an ENT specialist. He had tubes put in b/c of ear infections and they're doing there job as far as that goes.

I know it's all pretty scary for you right now but if I was you, I'd let him have the surgery, but after you've gotten a second opinion. Don't worry about scarring at his young age. That should be the last thing to worry about. Put the surgery behind you so you won't have to worry & wonder anymore. I will say a special prayer for your son.

How big is the knot? My son has had a very small know 1 1/2 inches behind his right ear since he was about 6 months old that is movable. He is now 18 months old. He had tubes put in his ears last October which helped the ear infections, but didn't get rid of the lump. In May, he started running high fevers that we couldn't control and his lymph node was swollen considerably and was diagnosed with Kawasaki's Disease. Does he have any other symptoms of any illness? I would get a second opinion about the procedure.

I would definitely have the procedure done. The knot could be cancerous or something else serious. Your son is young and any procedure has risks, but modern medicine being what it is, he should sail through it just fine.

Better safe than sorry. Best of luck to you and your little boy.

I would get a second opinion, and a third, by a specialist. It is important to be sure. No one can say what to do over the net. because we don't know what it is. I think it is important to find out what it is and then consider the pros and cons of removing it.

You're asking something this serious HERE!!?? If you love your child, skip Y!A, discuss this with some DOCTORS, and make sure you get as many opinions as you can from professionals before you make a decision. Then do what they recommend. That is the best thing you can do. Good luck!

I would get a second and maybe even a third opinion from doctors affiliated with major hospitals before making the decision. I wish you and your son the best of luck.

frankly i would have a SECOND opinion. i am real curious as to WHY the tubes were put in, WHY they didn't work, - and if this means that the doctor doesn't even know what it is..

get a second opinion for sure before getting surgery.
