It's a great area in the city. Near rockafeller center, etc.. The best deals on diamonds are not found there, but the selection is amazing. There are tons of jewelry stores to choose from

For shopping or tourism?

For shopping I suppose there is a lot to choose from, but it feels more like used car lots lined end to end. Some of the store fronts are owned by one seller, but more have stalls inside of them, each stall has it's own, private seller who pays rent there. When I've gone I've often felt pressed and even hassled a bit. I never made a purchase there.

If you want to be dazzled by diamonds as a shopper or tourist, you're better off going to 5th Ave right off of Central Park South. There you'll find Tiffany's, Cartier, Bulgari and other high end jewelers, and don't be scared off by their fame. I purchased several times from Tiffany's, they are very friendly and knowledgeable and there are options for every budget.

It's fine as long as you are an expert jeweler and know what you are purchasing and don't get scamed.
