My question would be "which 'original translation' would that be?"
Certainly puts a very different spin on the Christian concept of God though, doesn't it?

Sorry, no. Whether he's talking about the Old Testament Hebrew word ('ab) or the similar Aramaic ('abba), or the New Testament Greek (pater) they are all equivalent to our word "Father". (Same goes for the Latin for that matter.)
Of course, just as in English, "father" can sometimes be used metaphorically. But that kind of use is not 'the original', nor should it just be assumed without good evidence.
