Ocean Water

Drinking too much water rarely causes overhydration when the body's systems are working normally. People with heart, kidney, or liver disease are more likely to develop overhydration because their kidneys are unable to excrete water normally. It may be necessary for people with these disorders to restrict the amount of water they drink and/or adjust the amount of salt in their diets.

Since the brain is the organ most susceptible to overhydration, a change in behavior is usually the first symptom of water intoxication. The patient may become confused, drowsy, or inattentive. Shouting and delirium are common. Other symptoms of overhydration may include blurred vision, muscle cramps and twitching, paralysis on one side of the body, poor coordination, nausea and vomiting, rapid breathing, sudden weight gain, and weakness. The patient's complexion is normal or flushed. Blood pressure is sometimes higher than normal, but elevations may not be noticed even when the degree of water intoxication is serious.

Overhydration can cause acidosis (a condition in which blood and body tissues have an abnormally high acid content), anemia, cyanosis (a condition that occurs when oxygen levels in the blood drop sharply), hemorrhage, and shock. The brain is the organ most vulnerable to the effects of overhydration. If excess fluid levels accumulate gradually, the brain may be able to adapt to them and the patient will have only a few symptoms. If the condition develops rapidly, confusion, seizures, and coma are likely to occur.

Do you mean by drinking too much water, or just by drinking water?

Ghiardia (okay, so I don't know how it's spelled, but it's pronounced gee-are-dee-uh) is a virus found in unclean water, it causes you to have diarrhea and vomit and all sorts of stomach problems. I would imagine that if let go for long enough, or if you didn't drink clean water, or water at all after you initially contracted it, it would be possible to die, as diarrhea causes dehydration.

Also drinking too much water (as did the Chico State student who died a few years ago) floods the cells in your body... The cells literally burst because they try to soak up all the water to prevent the water from harming you, and in an attempt to keep the salt to water ratio correct in your body, but of course, fail. This is why gatorade is so important to athletes, and at the correct concentration (I don't know what the exact ratio is, but more water than gatorade) is better than water- it has all the correct salts that your body needs.

Did you know you can die from drinking too much water?

Our bodies work by electrical impulses that are transmitted via salts in our bodies. Too much water can dilute the salts where the electrical impulses are transmitted effecting the heart and brain function.

Also, the excess water can cause swelling in the brain and organs which causes damage due to the pressure build-up. It has to do with osmosis where the water outside of the cells want to go inside of the cells due to the higher salt content within the cells.

Yes, I couldn't believe it but I saw on the news that a woman died from drinking too much water. It was a radio contest and whoever drank the most would win and she actually died and another woman almost died. It is somehow toxic for your body to drink too much water. These woman drank alot though, like gallons. I can't remember the details about why your body shuts down but yes it's true.

I once read in the newspaper that this person died because they had WAY too much water. Something happened to their kidneys and the person died. That's why I stick with diet coke. Joking. That's not good either.
